Indian Broadband revolution via Indian Railways

RailTel Logo

BSNL revolutionized the Indian approached to Internet by introducing DataOne service via ADSL technology. It is seen to many as revolution because of the area covered by BSNL. BSNL happened to be the largest PSTN service provider of India by virtually having RJ-11 telephone wire every where in the county. Hence they were able to make broadband available to every one, even for the person leaving at remotest corners of the country.

Now it seems the Indian Railway is coming to the party. Indian Railway happen to have one of the largest OCF network of the country. Up till recently, Indian Railway decided that as because, much of their bandwidth is not been utilized hence to generate more revenue they shall offer end user Internet solutions.

An Indian Railway Cyber Cafe

They have successfully tested end user domestic and corporate services at Bangalore and presently operating 250 large state of the art Cyber Cafes in 250 major stations of 83 cities nation wide. They are presently under process to deploy Wifi at 500 major railway stations nation wide and to provide wireless Internet at all important trains (Rajdhani / Shatabdi / Jan Shatabdi express).

What makes this news interesting that while replying to ChotoCheeta.com, Indian Railway end user service support (Railwire.in) have said that they would be now moving to second phase in which Kolkata as one of the city would have end user ISP solution from Railtel.in under their PAN-India roll out plan.

Kolkata will come under our pan-India rollout plans. From the customer support team we at present do not have good visibility into the exact dates and timelines. However, you could expect us to reach Kolkata by end of this year or early next year.

Indian Railways OFC Network map (As of Feb 2007)

Indian Railways have a total of 50,000 KM (as of Feb, 2007) of optic fiber network. Virtually where ever they have broadgage lines, they have their OFC running beside it. Hence this allows them to provide some really attractive rates. Bandwidth ranging from 256kbps to 155 mbps. Certainly this can be a really good alternate to any of the present running ISP, major players like BSNL (DataOne Broadband) / MTNL / Reliance / Sify / TATAIndicom).

Railwire.in end user ISP tariff for unlimited data uses,

256 Kbps Rs. 320
512 Kbps Rs. 620
1 Mbps Rs. 920
2 Mbps Rs. 1220
4 Mbps Rs. 2120
8 Mbps Rs. 3620
16 Mbps Rs. 6920
32 Mbps Rs. 13520

Therefore the wait begins for the RailTel service !!!

Explosion knocks 9000 servers off-line at The Planet Houston H1 facility

The Planet, one of the largest operator in US lost their Houston H1 data center facility on 31st of May due to electrical fire.

OMG !!! My Servers are on fire.

As per their official forum, the primary transformer suppling power to the facility caught fire and actually exploded. The explosion caused serious damaged to the buildings electrical system. It was so powerful that it knocked 3 walls down.

Local state Fire fighters didn’t allow the company to run any back up electrical source like their heavy duty generators forcing the facility to completely go off line.

For information, the Planet primarily hosts many of the hosting service providers. Hence not only their direct customers but rather many indirect customers found their services to be effected with this incident.

The Planet as confirmed that there is no physical damage to any of the servers or networking / computing equipment, however at this point they are still working round the clock to asses and repair the damage done.

Incidentally, ChotoCheeta.com is hosted at The Planet’s Dallas facility !!!

Quick look at BSNL 8MBPS - India’s Fastest domestic broadband connection

In just 5 years we have climbed a long way up in the Internet speed ladder. I can remember my self back in 2001, seating in the same chair, typing on the same keyboard, and accessing the Internet via BSNL landline (PSTN) with Satyam (Sify) dial up connection on my P-II 400 MHz with 128 MB of RAM .

Rs. 450/- which I used to pay for 1 month of Dial up pack (20 hours of access) to Sify and Rs. 1.26/- per call (near about Rs. 24 per hour) to BSNL for their PSTN access charge !!!

Watch / Stream live IPL T20 (Twenty - Twenty) matchs free via Internet

Yes, you are reading right, legally you can watch or stream IPL (Indian Premiere league) T20 (Twenty - Twenty) matches live via Internet.

IPL T20 Live via iplt20.com

The official BBCI T20 web site, http://www.IPLT20.com is broadcasting / streaming the matches live. You may need at-least a 2 MBPS connection to stream it without much of a lag, though while testing I have found there are little video lag (drop in fame rate) but commentary (voice) runs with out any lag.

Its BSNL 8 MBPS which makes the most out of this feature. I have tested and found BSNL 8MBPS is able to run it with good frame rate and without any lag whats so ever.

Unfortunate for most 256 / 512 kbps unlimited users as the service is quite unusable with such low bandwidth !!

One more interesting fact I must mention is, the telecast is the same which we see on TV but in iplt20.com, there is 0 ads in the telecast, so I quite enjoy watching the matches there at web broadcast.

Hosting with eWebGuru !!

Last 6 month or so were really good for this web site. The ChotoCheeta.com grew in good pace. One of this back end thing which allowed ChotoCheeta.com to grow in such speed is the hosting it self.

I am hosted with eWebGuru.com and hosted for last 6 month or so. Its a shared hosting, which means there would be many web site under same Server / VPS / IP residing side by side.

ChotoCheeta.com is hosted with basic plan of eWebguru.com which provides 20 GB bandwidth a month and it is eating around 70% to 82% of a the bandwidth a month, at-least I can judge that I am allowed to utilize the promised bandwidth.

Few things which I like about eWebguru.com which anchors me with this hosting are,

  • I am allowed to use full quota of my hosting plan !!
  • Good support - response time.
  • Really attractive pricing.

However there are few things which I don’t like about eWebGuru.com as with ChotoCheeta.com my visitors reports to face Error 500 (Internal server error) often and I have had down times.

Even though there are few down side of this hosting but still it is good enough for my site thus allowing me to not to worry about the hosting in near future at-least !!

For a web site like mine, eWebGuru.com definitely bags enough juice.

Microsoft research proves, theory of “Six degrees of separation” applicable to Internet also

Those who may be wondering, “What is this Theory of Six degrees of separation ?”, please note, Six degrees of separation, is a famous theory which suggests, on average, every person on this world is connected to each other by just 6 steps. You may obtain a detailed explanation at Wiki, which says,

Six degrees of separation refers to the idea that, if a person is one step away from each person he or she knows and two steps away from each person who is known by one of the people he or she knows, then everyone is an average of six “steps” away from each person on Earth.

six_degrees_of_separation.png

A recent research by Microsoft conducted over world wide net gives a boon to this idea. Jure Leskovec and Eric Horvitz, at Microsoft Research in Redmond Washington, have crunched through masses of data, logging a month’s worth of global ‘instant messaging’ conversations using Microsoft Messenger.

msn-messenger.jpg

In total they tallied up a whopping 255 billion messages sent in the course of 30 billion conversations among 240 million people during June 2006.

Eric Horvitz has mentioned on his official company report that,

even on world wide net, on a planetary-scale the oft-cited report that people are separated by “six degrees of separation” and find that the average path length among Messenger users is 6.6

Cost of Free Information

Free Information / Free Knowledge…

Forums / Blogs / User Groups / Discussion Board, they are all were made and boomed because of the fact, source of free information / free knowledge…

Today was a real disappointment for me… From a very known and active forum of Indian technological youth, I saw no one believed in providing or sharing the information, free…

Just think for your self, why are you here, reading this ??

It is because you are here with intentions to learn some thing to gain knowledge for free… When you want to learn some thing about computers or any thing, you always have an professional option to learn from a professional…

This is where the idea of user groups came in to the picture… Forums / Blogs / Discussion Boards all were meant to share information and that too for free…

Where as now I suddenly realise that, not any more… People are too much worried about Plagiarism, every one wants to have a back link or Credit on sharing information… Information is no longer free though we all claiming to provide it free in our blogs and forums or in discussion board…

The idea is simple, unless you can credit me, you are now welcome to learn, because if I learn, I will implement it… Implementation is the only reason for which I am learning, and when I implement the technique, which I have learnt from a blog or forum, it is possible that some one standing beside me is learning too, so now as the information is no long free, I have to repay which I learnt, by mean of mentioning the original source by browsing the Internet to come a the blog or forum from where I learnt…

The idealism now have changed !!! Which is so disappointing…

The reason I started foruming of bloging is to share information for free, because when I was in my early life with computers, I saw I had to pay to over come certain problems with my computer or how did i use a software or a device… I was cheated many times because of lack of information regarding certain products and techniques !!!

I am no god, I cant reach out for all the people over there in the Internet like me facing problems… but at-least I can share what ever little knowledge I have with what ever little number I can reach out too…

Bloging / foruming is what i do after talking time off from my delay routine with just that goal of sharing information, free information…

Didn’t I expected some thing in return from my blogs or forums ??

What I expected in return is that many be this will encourage others to follow and share their expertise which in terms to day has totally proven wrong…

Its 100% part from me who believes charging for information whom ever I have asked I have got the same reply !!! Information is now, no longer free….

At-least in my blog, I have decided to put up a notice… What ever you are reading or learning at ChotoCheeta.com, is free content… Completely free, its free knowledge, you are welcome to share / re-distribute with any one you like by any mean you like…
