The Beta 1 of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is now out for public beta testing. Its available for free download via Microsoft download center or Windows update.

There are couple ways of getting it.

  1. Downloading the offline installation source (installation DVD ISO image). -> 1.2GB
  2. Downloading via Windows update. -> 50 to 550 MB

For the first method, for off line installation, you are in need to register for the download. Where as the easiest for most users would be using the Windows update to obtain / download the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Beta 1.

There is a small tool given by MS beta center for beta testers to enable their PC to accept the beta software download via Windows auto update,

After running the given script, the Service Pack 1 (Beta 1) would be visible under the Windows Update.

By the way, in a test system, I found that SP1 needs at-least 2GB of free disc space to get installed..
