Is there anything after / beyond Windows or Microsoft is just stuck with it ?
Its been two decades as we are using Microsoft Windows. From the QS/2 till Windows 7, all of these have been modification or better builds of previous OS.
It has always been a trend to optimize the already existing code and built upon it. Most of the industry experts agree that frankly speaking, Windows is now to big to be written from scratch so all future version of Windows would be a better version of previous one with some new feature.
Question that comes to our mind is, Windows / Windows and Windows, will ever there going to be any thing new ? Many of us wonder if Windows 8 or Windows 9 can be something totally different as being re-written from scratch or will MS going be stuck with Windows forever ?
Is Microsoft stuck with Windows ? Is there anything beyond Windows ?
Matter of facts its just not us, Microsoft them self is working on few different type of technology from scratch.
Earlier they were used to be under NDA but since last few years lot of these projects have went under Microsoft Research, which works closely with students and universities to develop these as Open or Shared source software.
Few well know projects are,
Singularity
Started in year 2003, Singularity is the result of an attempt to create a very dependable OS platform.

Midori
Midori is there to address all those who wants to move freely between platforms (Mobil / Desktop / Server / Consumer devices) to allow them to have a reliable and dependable OS. An OS having built is security to address all those concern about vulnerability.
Once again a project under Microsoft Research. An attempt to create an OS from scratch to solve the fundamental problems and draw backs of Windows.
Many believes (SD Times / ZDNet) Midori might be that answer to replace Windows

BarrelFish
Barrelfish is a new operating system being built from scratch in a collaboration between researchers at ETH Zurich and Microsoft Research, Cambridge.
Among all, this one is more of a back end system, eying to serve the server end solutions.

Helios
Unlike the other three, this project still seems to be under cover or rather NDA as very little public information is available.
Some times few blogs releases bits and pieces of information about the project and its development.
Road Ahead of us..
Yes, its true, Windows 8 or even Windows 9 wont be an OS from scratch but its nice to know that MS isn’t stuck rather since last 5-7 years Microsoft Research is working with different universities and scholars of the world to develop and build that next platform or next generation of Operating system.
