WordPress planning to kill support for PHP 4 and MySQL 4
Although, till date WP is one of those software which supports almost all platforms and runs with minimum of support but it seems developers of WordPress are now targeting to drop support for PHP 4 and MySQL 4. As per WP stats, only 11% of WP installations are in PHP 4 or MySQL 4 platform, where as most of those web servers are PHP5 compatible.
WordPress 3.1 which is due in late 2010 would be the last version to support the PHP 4 and MySQL 4, where as users are in PHP/MySQL 4 platform wont be able to upgrade to WordPress 3.2 (due in first half of 2011) since minimum requirement for WordPress 3.2 would be PHP 5.2 and MySQl 5.0.15.
Common users are advised not to worry, as little they know, most of them are all ready running PHP 5 platform and those who would still stay in PHP 4, the built in feature of WordPress auto updater will warn the about the issue.
Infact WordPress is providing a plug-in to help all users determine which version (PHP/MySQL) they are running on.
