.CO domains to become public from July 20, 2010

Initially introduced as ccTLD (Country code Top Level Domain) for business and residence of Colombia, the .CO extension to soon be available for public registration world wide.

.CO domains will be made available via the following timeline:

  • April 1, 2010 – April 20, 2010: Sunrise A will allow registered Colombian trademarks to apply for exact match domains.
  • April 26, 2010 – June 10, 2010: Sunrise B will allow trademarks of national effect to apply for exact match domains.
  • June 21, 2010 – July 13, 2010: Landrush will allow anyone to apply for domain names of high commercial value.
  • July 20, 2010: .CO domains will become generally available.

In an email bulletin, the Europe Registry wrote,

Missed out on your preferred .COM?

As a worldwide recognised alternative to .COM, the recently unveiled .CO
represents a unique opportunity for companies to register succinct,
memorable domains if they have missed out on any preferred .COM.

Why .CO?

  • .CO looks similar to .COM
  • .CO is globally accepted as representing ‘COmpany’, ‘COrporation’, ‘COmmerce’
  • .CO provides an excellent opportunity for branding online with short and memorable domains
  • .CO brings a significant benefit for using off-line messaging to drive online traffic

Registrants hope to counter the problem of unavailability of .”com” domain names by issuing similar extensions. But personally I don’t think it would solve anything as those who are in tread of domain marketing would certainly jump in and book all those attractive words in this .CO extension also.

.CO Domains  on May 5th, 2010

This new TLD will bring new opportunities to companies around the world, as well as new startups to register their .co domain names and protect their brands.

Not sure about the value of the .CO domain to direct traffic for typos… never sure about that these days to be honest. Domain parking companies payouts are getting lower and lower.

I think it has huge value for online marketing strategies… AdWords strategies, SEO – Keyword rich anchor text links for high-traffic terms, etc.

I’ve gone for a few landrush… they’re not cheap but if I get the ones I’m after then I genuinely believe they will pay for themselves and then some. The general availability is a no-win no-fee system with http://www.lcn.com/co_domain_names (where I’ve preregistered them) so it’s a no brainer.

Just my 2 cents.
