Mild / small earthquake hits Kolkata / West Bengal / Eastern India / ANDAMAN ISLANDS / Japan coast – TSUMANI warning has been issued

It seems a mild / small earthquake has just hit Kolkata / West Bengal / eastern India / ANDAMAN ISLANDS / Japan coast.

Time was around 0130 hours of 11th August. It was mild and lasted for few (3-5 sec) seconds.

There are no news yet on any news channel or web site. So I am still waiting for an official word from the gov.

Update :-

Initial reports suggest that the epicenter is at Andaman and the bad news is, it is a 7.7 which has hit them directly.

There was another at the same time, located near cost of JAPAN also. CNN has just broke the story.

(CNN) — A tsunami watch has been issued after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean near India’s Adaman Islands, authorities said.

The watch covers India, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia and Bangladesh, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

TSUNAMI warning has been issued and if any one is reading this and is in any of the effected area, then please contact local authority for appropriate action and seek advise on what to do.

If a TSUNAMI is generated then mainland India / Bangladesh / Myanmar / Thiland / Indonesia has less than 3 hours where as folks over there in Andaman have lees than an hour before they get hit by a tidal wave !!!

“It is not known that a tsunami was generated. This watch is based only on the earthquake evaluation. Authorities in the region should take appropriate action in response to this possibility.”

The estimated tsunami travel time would be an hour or less to the coasts of the Andaman and Nicobar islands, according to a bulletin issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

A tsunami would reach the coastlines of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia within one to three hours.

Lets pray that this stays as a warning and never becomes reality !!! We all know what TSUMANI in India ocean can do.

Good news for South East Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia) also as just like Japan Meteorological Agency, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has also called off the TSUNAMI watch, which was issued for Indian Ocean.

yes. i felt it too! i got down with my family from 8th floor to the ground.it was for more than 20 seconds.everything was shaking. the funny part is there is no confirmation of this from any news channels.

Yeah,

It is true, I felt it. I stay at Lake town. Everyone is sleeping at their home, except watchman.

Actually, I was surfing in web in my pc. Suddenly everything started shaking. I teribly became panic and hurrified and ran out of my building.

Then, tried to open in news channel but no news as such. Thanks for putting in internet.

I woke up by the shaking! My window grill crancked. As i didn’t have TV, i was not able to find out what’s going on… Switched on the internet and found couple of sites talking about it.
I’m located at central Kolkata. One of my friend confirmed the news flash on NDTV.

I am from Baranagar. My LCD monitor was shaking abnormally. Then I felt my house was shaking. It lasted for a minute or more. It was terrible.

A powerful earthquake measuring around 4.5 on the Richter struck Kolkata for 30-40 Seconds. Since it lasted for a short duration, there was no loss experienced. Thanks to God for this.

I am not sure if I can sleep tonight, as the E-Quake may recall again in any movement. Thanks guys putting it on the net..

Boy it was fun but later when I realized it was scary cause the measurement of richter was High (around 4.5 – 4.7) shown in news.

And here are the devastation Strategy of that scale :
Richter Scale

9.0 — Causes complete devastation and large-scale loss of life.

8.0 — Very few buildings stay up. Bridges fall down. Underground pipes burst. Railroad rails bend. Large rocks move. Smaller objects are tossed into the air. Some objects are swallowed up by the earth.

7.0 — It is hard to keep your balance. The ground cracks. Roads shake. Weak buildings fall down. Other buildings are badly damaged.

6.0 — Pictures can fall off walls. Furniture moves. In some buildings, walls may crack.

5.0 — If you are in a car, it may rock. Glasses and dishes may rattle. Windows may break.

4.0 — Buildings shake a little. It feels like a truck is passing by your house.

3.0 — You may notice this quake if you are sitting still, or upstairs in a house. A hanging object, like a model airplane, may swing.

2.0 — Trees sway. Small ponds ripple. Doors swing slowly. But you can’t tell an earthquake is to blame.

1.0 — Earthquakes this small happen below ground. You can’t feel them.

The Richter scale grows by powers of 10. An increase of 1 point means the strength of a quake is 10 time greater than the level before it. Here’s how it works:

An earthquake registering 2.0 on the Richter scale is 10 times stronger than a quake registering 1.0. A quake registering 3.0 is 10 X 10 or 100 times stronger than a quake registering 1.0 A 4.0 is 10 X 10 X 10 or 1,000 times greater than 1.0 and so on.

it was about 1.28 a.m in kolkata when i felt the termor of the quake.I was sitting on a chair and it suddenly started shaking.Than i saw that water in the bottle which was on the table started shaking.at that moment i realised that it was an earthquake.i am 25yrs old and i dont remmember i have felt any shake bigger than this in KOLKATA..So frends stay alert for some time…VIVEK

Finally got the phone number of star ananda and they confirmed the earthquake reports. Soon after it appeared in the various news channel. Disaster reporting systems in our country are still rudimentary. I hope it changes for better; till then forums like this are doing a great job.

hi everybody,i was with my work in my desktop,my flat is just bside a big lake.at a moment i feel that the computer table and chair on which i was sitting is shaking…i thought that dis might be for the stress ,but not, when i move to wash my face with water i again feel d same ,,but this is a bigger one..i frightened and rush to d balcony and i saw the ripples in the lake water……..i never felt dis type of before…………..

Ya, of course i know how google works . that is the main reason i searched for this on the net immediately. This site never mentioned it as a news initially. Rather, you just mentioned that you possibly felt a mild earthquake in kolkata which many people felt. Search anything related to this quake … probably this is the first link which is coming up in google SERP at this moment.

It was after 10-15 minutes on getting the news from internet that i saw a news flash on NDTV 24×7 and later all the news channels followed.

And, none of the indian news channels cover any live/current news during night hours except for some emergencies like the 26/11 attack. you wont hear even a headline mentioning this quake before early morning on any indian news channels.

BBC and CNN have already mentioned this as Tsunami warning.

Hello, I reside at a housing complex near Behala. Last night I finished my studies and went to bed around 1:40 AM. I was listening songs through mobile earphone. Suddenly I felt that my bed is shaking. I went to Balcany and felt that the walls were shaking. I understood that it might be a E quake as i had experienced similar quake when i used to stay in Delhi. I immediately ran to ground floor by staircase. No one was outside the flats. Till the quake has vanished. I could not sleep and kept on watching the news channel. Meanwhile I sent SMS to some of my friends and relatives intimating the same. After 2 hours some of the news channels confirmed that it was a mild quake. I slept at 5 AM in the morning. When I searched the news at google, i visited this site and thought to share my experience to all….

You know when it happened, I was playing a game on my PC when the computer desk started shaking literally an in an instant, my pet birds freaked out- all of them!! They say birds and animals get to know it first.
Then my eyes rested on my half-filled bottle when the water flicked and danced. As if, as if, I was watching a sequel of Stephen Spielberg’s Jurassic Park.
It was amazing and scary.

Hi friends, Let me share my experience with you all. At around 1:30am while I was sleeping I woke up by a strange continuous movement in my bed. I immediately understood that its an earthquake. I immediately took my 3 years young daughter on my lap and asked my wife to do the same with my 6 months little one. We literally got worried. I remembered the Latur quake, how it turned the life there. But thanks God Al-mighty nothing happened and all are safe. I think there is no news of damage of life or property.

I too experienced the same thing. It was around 1:30 AM last night 11/08/09.
I was chattin with a friend of mine with the help of my laptop n was in bed that time..i felt d bed shaking..firstly i thought probably due to some nervousness or smthn i felt..then again..n it was little increased..n i stay in ground floor..n felt so much..
then after that time..searched on net..didnt get anything..again in d morning i searched n got many pages..so i am writing here..
but it was scary..i must accept..

omg it was like effffing scary last night myGOD. so i was just wwatching CSI:NY (lol) on tv at like 1 30 am on the sofa in my living room, and our dirver, whose like my uncle, his name’s chotelal right, so he was sleeping on the floor, like watching tv as well. so for a few seconds i thought i was dizzy so i was ignoring it, but then i got pissed so i was like, chotelal ji, dude like stop moving the sofa around or something…and i turn around and hes just sititn there like with a freaked out look on his face. he was like”uh..whats happeing”///and as we were speaking we were literally swaying from side to side—and thenlike at that moment, our 3 maids, who were eatin in the kitche, they ran out and came to us and were like OMFG what the hell IS THIS….they were like”i was just sitttin and eating and i literally started swaying side to side. and as all this were happening, everything around us was moving. like the mirrors were swaying from side to side, sofas obviously, and everything. God, and all this in the matter of like 15seconds which is like NOTHING. mygod. truly an experience but i got freaked yesterday so went online and switched to news channel but nothin was on yet. good to know its bein talked abt right now

My wife drawn my attention at around 1.30 am on 11.08.2009 that she felt 4 shakes over a periond of 5/6 seconds on the bed she layed down. The bed was quite heavy and impossible to move manualy. I was in the living room but I felt nothing. I said it might be a mild earthquake. Later this night I hard from my son at Kolkata that he experienced shame shakes at around same time while he was sitting on a rocking chair. No news in any calcutta based news channel throughout the day.

I was on a business trip to Calcutta along with two of my senior colleagues from the same company. We had a late night dinner and a few drinks and have been chitchatting and watching the TV on the 11th Floor of the building, which was a well developed community in the outskirts of Calcutta, near the bye-pass.

Suddenly, I felt my single seater sofa is going backwards. I kept quite, because i thought it is due to a drink problem, however, my two friends got alarmed as they also felt this phenomenon. We rushed out side the building as we knew the tremor was so strongly felt in our room that this is the main quake and another after effects will follow. As it was 1:30 in the morning, the entire complex of several buildings were fast asleep. In my life, I experienced the earth quake for the first time. I went to bed at 2:30 after taking a long walk outside the building. There was nothign reported in the local TV or newspapers which is weird…!!
