On my old computer I experimented with Ubuntu (as I was having problems with XP) and was introduced to some great freeware applications. My new computer came with Windows7. The new computer with windows7 is working much better, but lacks some functions. So I was pleased to find these freeware applications were available for windows7. I would recommend:

Firefox as it seems a bit faster than Internet Explorer and has some great add-ons including BetterPrivacy (deletes Flash player super cookies), DownloadThemAll (a download accelerator), and Flagfox (shows you lots of useful info about the website you are viewing – good for safer online shopping)

Thunderbird email client – I couldn’t get on with Windows Live Mail

OpenOffice – I tried the trial of the latest version of Microsoft Office but didn’t like the new interface

Gimp – powerful image/photo editing software

MagicDisc – a virtual disk drive program which allows you to save and mount an image of most CDs/DVDs to/from the hardrive. Very handy if you’re 2nd computer is a Netbook or Nettop. A USB to IDE cable from USBnow.co.uk is also very useful if you have old Hardrives or DVD drives hanging around.

I find Adobe’s PDF reader to be too full of bloatware these days. So I use this light PDF reader: Foxit.
