Apple OS X gets a Virus attack – P2P distributed iWork 09 comes with OSX.Trojan.iServices.A Trojan Horse

And you thought MAC wont get an infection ?

Intego, a leading security application developer for OS X platform just issued a major security bulletin warning all apple users about a potential threat.

Intego has discovered a new Trojan horse, OSX.Trojan.iServices.A, which is currently circulating in copies of Apple’s iWork 09 found on BitTorrent trackers and other sites containing links to pirated software. The version of iWork 09, Apple’s productivity suite, are complete and functional, but the installer contains an additional package called iWorkServices.pkg.

According to their report, at-least 20,000 copy of this software has been distributed over P2P (Bit-Torrent) networks, all of those users are now possibly running a compromised MAC (OS X). Once infected with this malware, which is designed to install additional malware (Virus / Spyware / Adwares) the clean up process becomes very painful.

Well there is no reason you couldn’t get a virus on a Mac. More difficult (not half as lousy as Windows) and les common. Remember who came up with the first virus/backdoors? No?, check it.
Also if you pirate sowtware on bit torrents you are looking for it No?

LOL at the mac fanbois.

@arnie23: why would you LOL at someone’s misfortune? Computer viruses are not a laughing matter whichever type of computer you own.

P.S. it’s spelled “fanboys”… perhaps PC’s don’t come with a ‘y’ key?

K, that’s just nuts. People downloading and installing stolen software does not count as a virus, it’s like picking up a car at a chop shop and then complaining that they won’t honor the warranty at the dealership.

As far as empathy, how bad would you feel if a burglar cut their hand breaking a window to steal something from your home?

By the way, I use bit torrent and free software, but I torrent legal media from trusted root sources. I am a huge fan (and developer) of open source software, but believe in the right of creators of content to make their own assertions on who can use their stuff (with reasonable limitations—see “Lawrence Lessig” in wikipedia for someone with a rational bead on the future of creativity)

Hi Warren,

Infact, recent build of Windows 7 is also affected under same process.

Not only bit torrent or p2p, any time when you download a pirated software from any unauthorized source, you risk being infected with these malware.

Thanks,

Yeah, the Macintosh user arrogance helps out a lot here.

What apple morons, I don’t install windows pirate, so I don’t have viruses.

Baseless attacks on the IQ of the contributor is not the same as pointing out some flaw in their argument. Yes, installing pirated software in any OS is asking for trouble. But there have been a great many vulnerabilities in windows which does not require someone to explicitly download and install software from an untrusted source. So even if you don’t pirate windows, and don’t install pirated windows software, you are still at significant risk of being infected. This (so far) is not true on OS X. The average hack time for a windows pc on an open network (static ip, no firewall) is 2 minutes. This (so far) is not true on OS X. Windows 7 is a significant improvement, and kudos to microsoft for working hard to fight back the storm of windows malware, but for now I’d rather work and play elsewhere with an absurdly better track record.
