How to make your internet connection faster ?

Yaaaaawn...

At-least 10,000 times, since 2000, in last 8 years I have google-d / MSN-ed / Yahoo-ed / Altavisat-ed and all other search engine-ed to find the right answer or tips and tricks or tweaks for the question as how do I make my Internet connection faster ?

No matter what type of connection I use, Dial up, EDGE, ADSL, broadband, cable or any such, I always feel to be slower than usual !!!

Why ??

While searching, I have learned few very important lesson and hard facts which I would like to share with my readers. Some of the facts are not that satisfactory for our mind but what to do, facts are like that.. Most of the time they are hard to believe !!

First and most important is to understanding our own limits

Many of us tends to overlook or simply forget the difference between Kilo Bytes and Kilo Bits. many of us wants to view Windows or our download manager reporting download speeds of 200 kbps+ with a connection in which ISP have promised to offer 256 kbps.

Matter of fact, all of our ISPs advertise their bandwidth in Kilobits per seconds, which is 8 times higher than Kilobytes per second, in which Windows or any other download manager would calculate the file transfer rate.

Meaning, in case of a 256 kbps connection, we are suppose to get 32 kilo bytes per second of download speed.

How do I make my Internet connection faster ?

Here is a hard fact. There are not much what we can do as an end use to make the actual Internet connection faster !!

Why cant I make my connection faster ?

In case of our Internet connection, there are very little control, which, as an end user we have over the allocated bandwidth by our ISP. For example, if I have subscribed to my ISP for a 256 kbps plan, then there is no way to obtain 300 kbps apart from upgrading the plan to a higher one.

Can any software tweak help ?

Most of the application builders try their best to provide their software with best and optimized settings to utilize the maximum available bandwidth, hence there are very little what we can to do squeeze more out of them. However, having said that, few application tends to perform better than others when it comes to using the bandwidth.

Try and use alternate browsers like FireFox / Opera against Internet Explorer. Some users like FireFox over Opera or IE where as many other would prefer to browse with Opera !!! By the way, do you know, Microsoft is coming out with Internet Explorer 8 ? The beta version of IE8 is available for download.

Blah Blah.. Read all that, but I still feel I am slower

Although there are not much we can do in terms of making the connection faster, but there are much can be done to make sure that we don’t waste the available bandwidth.

  • Auto-update of Installed software can run as a background process and eat up your available bandwidth to make your browsing experience slower. So you may turn off the auto-update of installed software and Windows to cut down the bandwidth utilization.
  • While we browse, we should look and stop any background application eating the available bandwidth. So many times I have found my P2P client is running in background, (under taskbar) hiding from my eyes and uploading the Linux distro which I have put on for download the other night.
  • Malware like Virus or a Spyware can always slow you down by utilizing your Internet connection for their own use. Always make sure you are using an up-to-date AntiVirus and AntiSpyware protection to keep the PC free of Virus and Spyware !! Mind you, your Windows comes with a built in AntiSpyware called Windows Defender (Vista or Win 7, in case of WinXP, one can download free)
  • Use of a firewall can help to stop unwanted apps to access the Internet.
  • If you need to download a large file, say about 50 MB or more, always try and use a File Transfer / download manager. There are many free options available, FlashGet / Free Download Manager (FDM) / Internet Download Manager (IDM).

Hey dude, you have missed a point !!

Do you think I have missed anything ? Please feel free to post a comment to let me and all other reads know as if there are any thing else can help us to make our connection faster.

Choto Cheeta  on January 10th, 2009

Hi tashi,

Thanks for your comment.

I have written at the beginning that facts are hard to believe but what to do, they are truth.

The point is simple. If your connection capacity is a certain kbps (numeric value) ex 256. Then there are no software method to make it work faster than that without the bandwidth upgrade :(

However, at the end, I have also requested all those who would feel that I have missed a point or 2, to share their thought or any other method which can help to make a connection faster.

Hence, if you know any tips or trick on this subject, please do share them :)

Thanks.

Hello Durgesh,

I did not get your question.

Can you please elaborate it a little.

http://www.youtele.com– We abide by the TRAI guidelines by providing more than 80% of the susbcribed broadband connection speed between the ISP node and the user.

Just read on the above site so copy-pasting here for the knowledge of all -
Q.1:-Would like to understand the meaning of above statement.

I have bsnl-500 combmo plan.Speed is very good at early morning-Can get 225kbps download with download accelerator.
Day time and pick hrs r horrible.Sometimes can’t open the web page even.

Q2:-Some tricks in selecting networking-tcp/IP properties-IP address -DNS server–playes any roll in this??
Q3:- Is there anything availabel, helpful to increase the upload speed as well??Tips as above or any free software??

Badly need some solution.

Thanks in advance.

theres nothing like google chrome being faster than opera or firefox. At low band width say using data card, opera is the fastest of all…next is firefox and least being IE6…safari are not bad either…google chrome is in beta version and needs real effort to catch up with others.I m an ardent user of internet and know the real strength of all those funny and filmsy gossip.I think a comment must be genuine and artifate with facts.check out my latest blog at my site…tashiwangdi.blogspot.com

True , very true as far as spped is concerned you cannot do much but as far as browsing experience is concerned you can do a lot.

Disabling of background running program , auto-updates of programs , no use of flash/heavy graphics , blocking of pop-ups , use of browsers other than IE are some methods which helps.
The web is full of tricks and tweaks which is largely of no use.see one of my posting

Can you please let us know that which ISP and what plan are you using ? Also which program have shown you that your speed is 6 kbps ??

Thanks,

techfreakindia  on January 21st, 2009

@prashant

Surely , you deserve a better speed then mentioned one , even if you are BSNL broadband user. Even BSNL broadband gives better speed during peak hours. The thing you fisrst check is “presence of spyware”. At this stage , I would suspect “spyware” only, which causes such a slow speed that too everytime. So do the following tasks

(1) Install latest Spybot and its definition file.Run it and ensure that your system is clean

(2)For troubleshooting purpose, remove all of browser toolbars and BHO components. Better installed freshly a copy of Chrome and check it.

(3)Run Avast antivirus too.
(4) Check the services which are running. Stop the unwanted , undesired services and observe.

To get better net connectivity your system must be properly tuned. Hence use system tuning measures regularly

HI David,

Thanks for your comment… However I do request you to please go through the post once again.. I have already given the answer..

Well, the thing about making your internet connection faster… if you have not tried, maximising your bandwidth may help improve it. Windows only uses 80% of the capacity for internet, so you can change that through Group Policy Object Editor. Also, make sure all temporary internet files are deleted. Note that only windows disk cleaner will not work, so use other programs such as CCleaner, and tick just about every single box. But that was a very nice summary of all of the main things of internet connections. Thank you. =)

SIDDHARTH SHUBHAM:

plese make your aircel web fast

AirCel, as per I know is a GSM operator hence they must be proving the data services either via GPRS or through EDGE network..

So, Make sure the device you are using to access internet, supports “EDGE” feature.

Secondly, even with EDGE, you would get a real time speed of 80 – 110 kil bits per second, meaning download speed of around 7 to 10 kbps..

Sorry but your connection can’t go faster than this :( , the limit is with its hardware so, no software modification would allow any thing faster..

hi frnds try my hacking trick and u can make your gprs for any service provider the extreme fastest.Normally speeds upto 2kbps to 25kbps.After hacking 75kbps to 90kbps. Email me if satisfied, unsatisfied,or facing problems. 1/note that gprs tower and calling network tower are different .The gprs tower is not shown in ur handset. But gprs tower depends on ur network tower. 2/you are going to connect your gprs enabled handset with a dish that comes with ur dish tv or tata sky…. 3/how? u have to bring out two wires one from the tower boosting socket its round golden colour having a hole in it near the nrtwork ic.And another from the tower ground and not the chasis ground.it may be a thin shit of copper or tin…. 4/then connect the two wires with the wire of the dish not connected with the dish box.no dish box is requred. 5/Am an expart hardware so dont try this with the cable line of local cable provider bec it possess live voltages. 6/so thats all try the ultimate speed with gprs using my tricks thanksssssssssss…

I’ve wasted time clicking on your crappy article which claims to have information to make your internet speed faster, only to find out you’re completely lying and instead claim it can’t be made faster!

There was not a single helpful thing in there that anyone who has googled faster internet doesn’t know……

sam  on December 1st, 2010

you claim that the internet connection cannot be made faster…..I partially agree with you….. I am also a guy like you who has spent quite a lot of time on the web searching for the same thing and like you I have also learnt some hard facts, but they are not as disheartening as your facts are but they may be a bit scary. Few days ago I was reading an article over the internet-cannot remember the web address) about how an American ISP screwed it’s customers (with the help of FBI) for squeezing extra bandwidth and consequently resulting in slower service for other customers of that ISP. All the screwed people were computer experts…one of them was about to get an award from Microsoft for some contribution in windows media segment………………………so the bottomline is, if you have profound knowledge in computer science and know how to play safe…..the world is yours

network.http.max-connections = 64
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server = 10

If speed gets slowed down then there may be many reasons behind it
1]viruses,malwares,etc.
2]registry errors, broken shortcuts, heavily fragramented hard disk,
3]improper optimization of registry for your pc

I to choose all-in-one suites like
1]Iobit advanced system care
2]Tuneup utilities

What you read are true. The best way to make internet connection faster is to upgrade your internet speed from your ISP [internet service provider]….. If you try to buy some software they won’t do any justice if your internet speed is slow. I am a computer technician and that’s based on my experience. It would mostly cost you around $10 more to upgrade your internet speed to a minimum of 2.0mbps or higher. Browse for diff. deals to get the most out of it.
If your internet speed is around 2.0mbps and its still slow, try to see if its your computer’s fault. Try to uninstall unused programs and run a complete anti-virus scan. Hope this helps
