Kaspersky Universal updater – Tips and tricks and how to use it ?

An interesting update solution from Kaspersky Labs are now in public Beta stage !! Which is suppose to replace all off-line update solutions from Kaspersky LABs.

The idea is simple. Provide users a tool which can be run from USB / removal media to download the product updates in that USB / removable media, which now can be used to update the kaspersky product offline by taking the USB / removal media to any PC which has Kaspersky product but no live Internet.

The tool is downloadable from Kaspesky web site, it has 2 versions, one CLI and a GUI for both Windows and Linux platform. As an end user I guess we all would love the GUI one.

Where to download the Kaspersky off-line / universal updater ?

One can visit the URL -> http://support.kaspersky.com/updater?level=2 to download the latest version of it. Please make sure you download the file KLUpdater.zip [ZIP -> 833KB] as it contains the GUI interface also.

What is it ?

It comes with a set of files which are meant to download and save all update for a specific kaspersky product in your pre-defined folder which can be used to update that specific kaspersky product without help of Internet and via this off-line location (folder).

How do I use it ?

Once you have downloaded the zip file (update-for-windows along with gui-for-updater) from the given link, please extract them is the same directory or folder.

Kaspersky Universal updater ZIP file folder view...

The directory can be a USB device. Now all you have to do is run the file named KasperskyUpdater.exe.

How to configure the GUI Kaspersky universal updater of the GUI of KasperskyUpdater.EXE ?

Please execute the file KasperskyUpdater.exe. Below window would appear,

kis_update_win

Now please select the product  for which you wish to obtain the updates. In my case I need update for the Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 version 8.0.506, hence I have only checked on that mention version.

Once done, please click Apply and start update. A command prompt should pop up and display the progress. Once done, now you have the off-line update for that product of kaspersky which you have selected.

Points to note.

  • It remembers that how much update is already downloaded, hence for example if you run  it today for 1st time, it would download 45MB of DATA, where as from next day, if you run regularly, it would only download the new update files, which are around few KBs !!
  • When you run this tool in a public PC, for example a cybercafe or a PC which doesnt have a proper AVS protection, then make sure you scan you pen drive before you plug it in your PC to update your product.

If you are wondering as how do you use this downloaded files to update your Kaspersky product, then please read this.

How to update version 7 / How to update version 8 (2009)

What can you do with it ?

It would solve few real life problems, one of the major would be the problem which many end users face with their slow or no internet connection !!!

If you have a PC / Notebook / laptop running any kaspersky product and either you have a very slow connection or infact no internet connectivity then you face a major problem as how do you update your version of Kaspersky ? This tool holds the answer for you. All you have to do is take the tool in an USB pendrive and plug it in to a PC which has Internet connection, now doesnt matter whether it runs any AVS or no AVS, all you have to do is run this tool to download the update for the product which you have in your PC. Now you can update your PC via that USB pen drive as all updates would now be stored in that USB pen drive :)

I have problem with this tool

If you face any issue, please report it back to Kaspersky via their official help forum.

Its too complicated, I want a ready made solution

Well in that case, please read this -> Kaspersky AntiVirus / Internet Security (8.0) 2009 offline update

Update -> March 21st, 2009

The update is been carried out because of availability of a new version of this product.

13:41:03: File does not exist ‘./rollback.ini’

how to get the rollbackForRetranslation.ini and rollback.ini?

I’ve some questions dear..
1. Is Kaspersky the best AV around?
2. Isnt ths functionality available in almost all other AV’s (even in AVG AV)
3. Will Kaspersky impose load on my system?

Am using AVG now and its a real pain in using it.. coz the scan takes up lotta resourses of my comp.

I am having a latest desktop from HP with vista home premium OS with low security settings to facilitate browsing through my dial up internet connection of 56 KBPS.

I have tried updating kaspersky 7.0 version by running internet continuously for 16 hours, still the update could not be completed beyond 75 %. Transfer rate was 1.25 KBPS.This seems to be not working and alos it is very costly as I understand that updates come every week.

I have 2 MBPS connection at my office plus I can go to cybercafe also to download the updates. Kindly tell me how to do it.

I had been using Norton earliewr and there was no problem in getting it updated from the same connection at home.
