In Acer website I found that Acer 5315 supports Directx 9 and 10. So, can it play latest games.

Hi,
During Dec 2006 I have bought Compaq v3000 model laptop with the following configuration.

AMD Turion X2 processor
512 MB Ram
80 GB HDD
14.1″ Widescreen Monitor
nVidia Geforce Graphics card
Wifi capable & DVD RW

Few months back it gave problems like in-built speaker sound flickering (only with some position it works) & the laptop starts only after swtching on the power button a couple of times or more. 2 weeks back the whole display went blank. The LCD lights on the laptop were on but there is no display. The warranty of the laptop expired a long time (10 months) now. I have submitted the laptop to a hp authorised service center. After a weeks time they informed me that there is a problem in the video card & to rectify it the whole mother board needs to be changed which will cost Rs 13,000.

I have searched in the internet & found this is a common problem with this model laptops & the solution is the change the motherboard. I used to download stuffs for long time with laptop on & AMD processor desipates lots of heat. May be it is because of this heat the soldering in the mother board could have got damaged. This is one of the theory I found in the internet.

I’m not sure whether I should change the mother board or would go for a entry level notebook with better configuration like increased RAM & increaded hard disk. What is the gurantee that after changing the mother board same problem will not occur? My usage is basic home computing including internet, music, movies & photo editing. I prefer GNU/Linux OS than Windows. I have tried many GNU/Linux distributions & no issues of any laptop with Free DOS.

Please provide your suggestions & advice.

Hi niielo,

I recommend Acer 5315 over Toshiba L40. Acer 5315 should be around Rs. 22,500/- (INR) in India !!!
