Possible BUG Find – Nokia Software updater crashes under Windows Vista

Nokia software updater is a software with allows you to update your phone’s (compatible) firmware by downloading the latest from Nokia web service !!

Nokia software updater is a free software available to all supported Nokia phone owners via their web site.

What is the BUG ?

Nokia software update crashes every time when you want to start it under Windows Vista.

Process to replicate the action ?

  • You must be using Windows Vista RTM (Home / Home premium / Business / Ultimate).
  • Download and install Nokia software updater (NSU) from their web site (version 1.4.36 en).
  • Start the Application

Expected result ?

The application would freeze (Hang / halts) at start up window, displaying,

Nokia Software Updater
v1.4.36en

Starting application…

Application halting at start up

After a minute or so, an error appears informing you,

Missing Software components

Critical software components are missing.
Please reinstall.

Missing Software components. Critical software components are missing. Please reinstall.

Nokia Official Word in it ?

Run the application under Windows XP compatibility mode without any visual theme or desktop composition and with administrator access. Stop any running firewall or Internet security / Anti Virus application.

Windows XP compatibility mode

How ever still the issue is not solved, the result is the same stop error. Further more as a customer you are suppose to contact nearest service center, and in India, service center has no idea about this application, they would only service the hardware (handset only).

Nokia has not accepted the bug. Therefore no official solution for this possible bug yet.

I think here Nokia should be responsible for the cause. They must put update compatible with windows vista.

One more reason not to use vista :)

Hello,

I must agree with Ravi, as me too think that it is a possible problem at Nokia’s end !

This is happening on my XP system too !!

barry  on May 21st, 2008

happens on my xp sp3 system too.

from my minor amount of debuggin, NSU launches nsl_host_process.exe which is suppose to sit there and listen on various ports, one of which is 62716. NSU is supposed to connect to this and do… something.

On my systems, nsl_host_process.exe starts for a second and then goes. NSU then sits there attempting to connect to :62716 for a few minutes, before it gives up and says there’s a critical error.

I’ve tried reinstalling it loads of times, makes no difference. Am at a bit of a loss…

I think nokia must create an updater which must compatible with windows vista.
Because windows vista is used by many people!

Erwin Julius  on May 29th, 2008

Slyther  on May 30th, 2008

Goody  on June 14th, 2008

It’s not Vista’s problem only, I’m using XP SP3, disabled all firewalls and still getting this IDIOTIC message

Egas  on July 6th, 2008

On my toshiba laptop the Nokia software updater didnĀ“t work under windows vista business and still display this famous error message ”critical software components are missing. please reinstall”.
The amazing situation is that on my HP laptop and under windows vista business the same application works!!!
On my both laptop I have the same AV, the same anti Spyware…., typically identical!!!!
can someone explain this matter?

There is an answer to this and its fairly simple. Turn of ics (internet connection sharing) and it works perfectly. Enjoy.

Dude, good job, just turn the ICS off and it works, if you can’t figure it out, just search google for ICS ;)

yessir  on October 26th, 2008

Thanks! The ICS did the trick for me as well. VISTA Prof. SP1.

Daniel  on November 3rd, 2008

Thanks a lot! It’s work on my Vista SP1 as well

BoT  on November 7th, 2008

Thanks a lot!

Vic Mann  on November 9th, 2008

Hahahaha… That was the most stupid thing ever. So we need to stop ICS to make the damn thing work? I don’t know who’s the worst: MS or Nokia. They are both idiotic and Nokia is coming up with these great Opensource OS’s and they only make their own software to MS and Mac. WTF is the package for Linux??? It sucks…

P.S.: Don’t try to run on Linux via Wine. I tried and it didn’t work.

“critical software components are missing please reinstall”

I got this message when i tried to run the nokia updater software.

I clicked ‘ok’ then right clicked on the nokia updater icon on my desktop and clicked ‘run as administrator’. This worked. The updater ran ok and I was able to update my phones software.

Now I can just click the icon as normal and it will run the software ok.

My operating system is MS Vista
