I would try to share what I have learnt
Budget yet performance Notebook for a Student or personal or small business
I have already went through the cheapest Main Stream notebooks or laptops here, at one of my quest to find which one to buy, whether the new 7″ notebook / laptops or the cheapest main stream notebooks / laptops.
Over these months I find my self with so many people asking one simple question, as a student or for basic yet performance need which is the notebook / laptop one should buy or rather what would be a value for money notebook which should not compromise on the performance factor too.
Before I can start my quest to find a budget yet performance notebook / laptop for a student or a small business professional or just for personal mobile usage, I need to shade some light on the subject of Budget.
What exactly can be called budget ?
I have taken a real good look in the present market and after reading all these emails and comments and views which I have received via my blog and forums / ug where I am active in, suggests a range of Rs. 30,000/- to 33,000/- can be considered as our targeted budget.
Value for money ??
What do I mean by value for money ?? Its really simple, as just to ask your self, do you get the performance against the money you are spending ?? As some time people think one must need a Core 2 Duo, where as in fact under a certain budget, one may find a AMD based solution offering far better over all performance than Core 2 Duo based notebook.
Do you need a notebook / laptop ??
If you, your self own a desktop and now want another portable solution then as a student, think twice, as spending a good Rs. 30k doesn’t make much sense, but still if you have to have a portable solution, then the cheapest main stream notebook range, which offers, Compaq C773TU may offer you the best value for money.
Let’s have a look at the models which you may consider of buying !!
The Compaq V3702AU

160 GB SATA 5400 RPM
SuperMulti 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support

Linux OS (No Windows)
1 Year International Warranty
Price :- Rs. 30500/- including TAX
There is also, Compaq C738TU which is Rs. 1000 cheaper than Lenevo N200 A29 including the ram upgrade to 1 GB.
Not only this, if you roam in your nearest computer market you would get many more options, how ever, these 4 above mentioned models have real good track and performance record and they are better value for money than any other model under this price range.
What you can do with these Notebooks ??
They are good enough for even basic video editing also. You can run heavy duty softwares like Pinnacle, Adobe Premiere, ofcourse a lot of image editing like PhotoShop. You can easliy convert all your 700 MB / 1400 MB DVD RIPs (xvid / avi / divx) to Video DVD or VCD, you can rip DVDs to convert them to 700 MB RIPs, all comes with Wifi and LAN so fully Internet and network compatible. Blue-tooth is also there with all, meaning connecting with mobile wireless would be really easy. All are WideScreen so all are pretty good with movies too..
So, What to buy and why to buy ??
All these above mention models have their own benefits. Let us list those points which we should consider on our quest to buy one.
-
The Compaq one has the best looks, where as the Lenovo is the ugliest of them all.
-
Acer comes with Best display (TFT Screen) where as the Compaq seems to lag behind on this factor.
-
The Lenovo comes with best support as well as real tough build quality where as Acer seems to be the worst in built quality !!!
-
The Acer is the cheapest of them all, where as Compaq is the costliest as more than Rs. 2.5 extra than Acer of the Lenovo.
-
Compaq packs the most power with AMD Turion X2 1.9 GHz and onboard Geforce 7150, where as both lenovo and acer lags behind with Pentium Dual Core 1.4 GHz and onboard Intel GMA x3100. 7150 is far better than x3100.
-
Its compaq which is the only one comes with an Windows (Windows Vista Home Basic) preinstalled, as rest is just free DOS meaning either linux or you have to load your own Windows.
-
The Lenovo A29 has the largest screen (15.4″) compare to the 14.1″ of both Compaq and Acer.
Feeling confuse ?
Let me make the subject more understandable.
No matter which ever of these 4 you buy, you will not loose out. All are fully vista compatible, all comes with enough processing power to satisfy your needs. Now final decision may depend on few factors like bellow.
-
Local price based on availability, I mean though all these are widely available, but you may find your dealer has a stock of a certain product so price would be lower in that case !!
-
Personal choice, this is the most important, as it is you who would be using, so buy the one which you feel looks best.
What would I vote for ??
Personally as for configuration wise I would go for Compaq V3702AU which is Rs. 32500/- including all tax and bundled OS (Windows Vista Home Basic), how ever I didn’t like the screen performance of it. Where as an over all package, though the Lenovo looks pretty ugly comparing with Compaq or Acer, but still my Vote goes for Lenovo A29 !!
So few you are making you choice based up on this article, then I would suggest, do take a look at the screen of the Notebook (V3702AU), if you like the performance and it comes bellow Rs. 33,000 including all, then go with Compaq !!

I m not that comppulsive a gamer, cheeto..
this info u gave
“x3100 is meant to drive vista with its full glory, but it is not meant to drive todays games…. Yes, NFS Most wanted would run with this graphics accelerator but with lower resolution and settings ”
is enugh to satisfy my needs, cheeto. why unnnecassarily burn a Rs 3335 hole in pithaji’s hard earned pocket

Hello Ram,
1420 is a 14.1″ model
1520 is a 15.4″ model
1330 is a 13.1″ model
So they are not in same segment to compare.. All three has their own advantage and disadvantages…
For example, 1420 is meant for home / business user, comes with a Core 2 Duo and option to add more ram as per need, its 14.1 inch, better battery backup and little less wait than 1520/1525…
Where as 1525/1520 is meant for power user, it would be heavy with full config, has plenty of upgrade options to add a lot of power in the hood… But more power – more heat, better config – more wait, heavy gaming – less battery backup…
The costliest would be 13.1 inch model of 1330, once again, meant for power user but who would be on constant move… XPS are the premium model of Dell, XPS 1330 is meant to be light while bagging enough power for any power user
, down side would be smaller screen and price !!!
If its a core 2 duo processors, then you dont need to think much about the processors clock speed.. base model (T5450 1.6 GHz) should be fine for you…
For Ram requirement, 2 GB is more than fine, now with Dell 1525 or 1520, upgrading to 2 GB is just Rs. 1500/- which is quite justified as in open market a 1 GB module costs Rs. 1100/-
… Vista or any game would run more than fine with 2 GB RAM
Now you have one requirement which is making the choice a bit hard… Requirement for gaming !!! Pleas note, x3100 is meant to drive vista with its full glory, but it is not meant to drive todays games…. Yes, NFS Most wanted would run with this graphics accelerator but with lower resolution and settings !!! Yes if possible eye for 8400 GS but as a gamer at-least you should eye for 8600 GT…
So if gaming is one requirement, then you need to puch for Dell XPS 1530 or DEll XPS 1330 which has option for 8600 GT cards

Sorry abt once again updating
…
do i need to go in for “NVIDIA(R) Geforce 8400 GS with 128 MB GDDR3 dedicated graphic memory which costs an xtra 3335 or can i do w/o it for a satisfying exper with games like NFS etc..
how will HP DV 6703TX compare with the above config and price?
what is ur opinion on xps 1330 ?
some errors in the last part, Cheeto ..
2GHz instead of 1.83Ghz , it should ve been..
the additional features listed: ie 2Ghz and 3Gb ram are come with the Inspiron 1525 model(which u would ve noted already)….
for gaming purposes, how do u compare the Graphics card acclearator of 1525 and 1420….
also educate abt the heating issues : Dell versus Lenovo..
Plz respond

I’m planning to buy a budget laptop.
what does bundled OS mean?
Hello Mr. Barthwal
The primary step you should take, if you plan to use it for 3 or 4 year terms, then, increase the warranty !! Acer would allow you to increase the warranty with Acer Extended warranty pack, which would cost you Rs. 5500/- for father 2 years from the base warranty to obtain support for 3 years in total !!
Thank u once again 4 replying chotu cheeta.
The cost of acer is 24000/- including vat n delivery charges.
Sirji tht means if i will use it roughly (from morning till late evening) it will affect its durability.
if yes then pls guide me abt the precaution while using acer so tht i can use it for 3 -4 years without any problems.
Hello Mr. Barthwal
Well you forgot to mention the main information which I needed, that was the price you are suppose to pay for the notebook !!
Note, Lenovo 3000 N200 0769-A29 is Rs. 29500/- incl all TAX (+ Rs. 1100 for extra 1 GB RAM).
So if you are paying bellow Rs. 25000/- for the total setup including all TAX / delivery charge and every thing, then stick with you model.
Now let us have a look at your model.
The Acer 5315 will come with GL960 chipset with GMA x3100. And with 1 GB RAM Windows VIsta ultimate will run smooth enough, how ever as you are thinking to purchase, Windows Vista Home Premium would be best suited for you.
Please note, there is NO visual difference between Home premium and ultimate. Its just some extra admin option and networking feature and some advance controls are available with ultimate which has no use for home entertainment. Therefore at Rs. 5500/- Home premium suites your need.
If you are wondering about the statement which I have made about Acer, then please note, Personally I see the acer looks really fragile when you are using. You dont get the feeling to use it with hard and rough !!! It seems more delicate darling rather a working tool !!!
So if you are getting it bellow Rs. 25k take home price, then stick with it

Good day Choto Cheeta
Sirji i recently ordered, acer newly launched model aspire 5315(celeron 2ghz,1gb ram). Will window vista(which one- basic, premium, ultimate) work on it. Also pls enlighten me abt the comments u had made previously.
“Acer comes with Best display (TFT Screen). Acer seems to be the worst in built quality”
I want to sell my HP dv1000. which is dead right now. How much i can get for this.
I ordered acer 5315 for entertainment purpose n to do net surfing. if my decision is not perfect then pls guide me as i it will take time for delivery.
Thanking u in anticipation.

what do you think about Benq joybook S41
http://www.benq.com/products/joybook/?product=1073
since it is new in notebook’s world, i have no idea about this … is it as reliable as Thinkpad T series ?
I found no Dell supplier around here. Dell is not very popular around here.
I think Dell XPS has the same spec as Benq R53 LE13, with Core 2 Duo T7100 1.8, 1 Gb RAM, Geforce 8400 Go and the price is about 1000US$ …
is T7250 (2.0 Ghz ) and T7100 (1.8 ghz) has big difference in performance ? I was thinking to get T7100 instead of T7250 if it has a little different in performance (but about 100$ difference)
Hello Mr. Adwin,
Why didnt you consider any Dell notebook models ?? Dell XPS M1530 should come under USD 1100 and with just upgrade to 2 GB RAM, it would be on of the best performer under this segment !!!
thank you.
