This topic is always relevant and is repeated endlessly through the years. I’ve tried everything mentioned in this article and comments. Today my favorite combination is Media Player Classic Home Cinema (MPC-HC) with all internal filters DISABLED. With this I use Shark007′s 32-bit codec (for whatever Windows installation is in use) along with his “x64 Components” if the installation is 64-bit. The compilation is not only well supported in his forum, but he answers (all?) queries himself, as required.

I’ve just come across Windows Essentials Codec Pack (8 MB) by http://www.mediacodec.org.

Previously I’ve tried K-lite, CCCP etc. too. K-lite is best. But this new WECP feels light and easy on system providing functionality to play almost all media files

Yes I would also go with option two.
Option two gives you the choice to use WMP which has more functionality than VLC.

VLC is good option..but installing any codec pack is much better option.

It depends as what should one download… To play simple AVI what people obtain from Internet (lets not discuss the content ) K-lite basic is more than enough… But for advance users, yes option is to go for K-Lite Mega … This is well explained in the K-Lite download web site, about which version is right for you…

So I would like to leave it on the user to read that and decide which one he or she needs !!!

I also faced the same problem with FLV files in VLC. I think this problem will be fixed in the next versions of VLC.
Personally I think the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is the best one out there.

But there is a problem…
In VLC if you play FLV files… It never lets you seek the video… (I mean going directly to XX:XX minutes of video…). Media Player Classic (with K-Lite Codec Pack) works fine though…

Also you didnt said which one is Best : K-Lite Codec Pack or K-Lite Mega Codec pack (Letter is better and huge BTW…)
