What to buy AMD X2 or Core 2 Duo - read before you buy a Notebook / Laptop
Many, many new computer users are asking me one basic question about their computing need, a very basic question, that, What to buy ?? will it be core 2 duo or will it be an AMD X2 based computer !!
Which is Better between Intel Core 2 Duo and AMD Athlon X2 ??
To be honest, this is a subjective question, there are 2 answer for the question, depending on your budget and need (use of the PC / Notebook / Laptop)…
You must understand, its not just the processor which you buy, its a full PC which contains many other parts, some of them contributes more than a processor to the overall performance of the PC / Notebook / Laptop…
If you just compare just those 2 processor, then, yeah, its the Core 2 Duo always comes as clear winner over AMD X2 range but as I said its the full system which ensures the performance for your PC… So a Core 2 Duo highest end processor based PC which contains other improper hardware may stay behind an AMD X2 based system with proper hardware support…
There are 2 major aspect of making or chosing a system configuration… The 1st one is to judge is that would the real use for the system ?? Do you really need a higher end processor and such when you plan to do basic office job with some entertainment ??
For example, I receive many emails asking to suggest a notebook for Rs. 45,000 (USD 900 more or less) with main need for Basic office job and some entertainment, music, movie !!! Most of them prefer to spend the total amount of a higher end config, which them self may never use…
Few quick facts…
Compaq C702TUwith 1 GB RAM (it comes with default 512 MB, so ask the your vendor to update it to 1 GB) is fully vista premium compatible… Comes with Intel GL960 chipset with GMA x3100, which means it will run all vista animation and Aero effects with full acceleration, its Rs. 25,200/- (INR) with 1 GB RAM and incl all TAX… Though it comes with Celeron processor but can run any software, even Adobe Premiere Pro… However just the processing time would be lot longer for such resource demanding softwares… !!!
So what I want to point is that even you can buy a Notebook with as low budget of Rs. 25000/- to satisfy all your needs, but only when, you understand the meaning of the work which you intend to Carry out…
Therefore with Budget of Rs. 45,000/- to Rs. 50000/- for a notebook which you plan to use for mainly some office job, some imaging, little home video editing and entertainment, AMD X2 range would provide a better solution !!!
There is no real benifit for a core 2 duo processor if it comes with a Intel 946 chipset of GMA 950 as one AMD X2 with Nvidia 7150 or such chipset will out performe the Core 2 Duo based notebook then…
So ever woundered how about this bellow setup if you have a budget of Rs. 45000/- to 50000/- to spend on your notebook ??
Compaq V6608AU with 2 GB RAM upgrade Rs. 35,400/- (INR) and Invest the rest of the ammount (10 to 12k) for a 19″ TFT display such as View Sonic vg1930wm which is Rs. 9800/- and a good 2.1 speaker system…
Use most powerful confuguration at budget of Rs. 35,000/- at move and enjouy full screen movies and bigger screen at Home !!

I always thought C2D is better… and in no condition can outperform AMD..
Thanks for clearing my mind and doubts…

Yes I agree with this. Though C2D is more powerful, in most of the realworld tasks there won’t be any apparent difference. With the correct setup we can have a better Athlon X2 system. X2 are cheaper than c2d and the saved money can be used for something else like getting a better graphics card.

Well, finally, I like this site and will be coming back more and more for discussions and help. I purchased laptop recently as a Christmas gift to myself. It is HP Pavilion dv2500 (14″ monitor). It comes with AMD Turion 64×2, nvidia graphic card, Broadcomm wireless mode, CD/DVD DL read/write, 200gig SATA hard disk, Windows Vista Premium. AMD Turion 64×2, I assume it is supposed to be running on 64, not 32 bit. or is it possible to install Windows Vista Premium (which in my case is pre-installed on hard disk), to run on 32 bit instead of 64. I have been told that there’s not much difference between these two?

Hello Travis
Thank you for comming back to my blog…
To clear some of your doubts… Its the a term by which a product of AMD is indentified… Like AMD Turion 64 X2… It comes with a term “64″ doesnt mean it just going to support only 64 bit OS…
As of now, any processor which supports 64bit platform, comes with full support for x86 (32bit) platform also…
So, any version of Windows Vista would run fine with the system…
Now the big question, do you need to run x64 ?? Please pay a visit to one of my blog post about Which version of OS is right for you ??
Thank you…

I am not sure about the price… but as for the configuration goes it is certainly a good performance Notebook for your needs however having said that, I would still add that Nvidia GeForce Go 7150 Mobile is better than the chipset this notebook comes with which is 6150 !!

Choto, i’m a college student, and want to purchase a laptop for a bit of movies/music/net/gaming (old ones like homeworld and galciv2, so a 7150 should do pretty well), standard college fare. My budgets around 30k. Based on what I’ve read on the net, I think i’ll go with the compaq v6608au. Any suggestions? I’ve got no problem going with an X2 Turion, for the record…and I’m put off by Acer’s plasticky-ness. I guess that doesn’t leave much choice, huh?
Choto Cheeta said
am January 26 2008 @ 12:22 pm
Hello Cyclone,
Budget is Rs. 30k, where as the V6608AU would be Rs. 35.2k with 2 GB RAM and TAX…
So its well over your budget as I see !!!
Do give a though for the C702TU… All though the processor is under power still its a great package over all, as with 1 GB DDR-II Dual Channel and incl TAX is Rs. 25.2k
Fully Vista Compatible
Also the Compaw V3424AU is also seems a good option as with 1 GB RAM it would come at 31k incl TAX

Great thoughts!
I am using compaq c702tu notebook with its factory hardware, i.e., just 512MB RAM and Celeron M 1.73MHz. I have a wonderful computing experience on office suite, image manipulation and to some extent video/audio editing also. So I must say - “Home desktop users have no need to go for those Duo or Quad CPUs, because they can’t get that processing benefit from their computing usage.” For general usage the speed difference between a core2duo and celeron M is minismal.

hi choto cheeta…
my Q is same as Sabyasachi (just above)
i want for pics, movies, dvd, cds, chat, surfing, tally , ms office, and other regular office applications…and may b sometimes oracle or few other applications though i dont intend to….
i am havg a option of dell inpsiron 1525 (intel C2D2ghz,2mb cache, 2gbram, intel integrated graphic x3000 accelarator)for some thing around 43k
but i actually liked dv6701au with AMD (amd turion 64 x2 1.9ghz,1gb ram, 1mb cache + nvidia go 7150m) bit unaware and doubtful about AMD can u help…me with which one to pick
Choto Cheeta said
am February 1 2008 @ 10:07 am
@navin
Dont be doubtful for AMD… take a look at compaq v6608AU, which comes with 1.9 GHz X2 / 2 GB RAM (upgrade from 1 GB) / nvidia 7150 onboard / 160 GB HDD… at Rs. 35200/- incl all TAX !!!
Over all X2 is pretty good deal you may go for it
Sabyasachi said
am February 1 2008 @ 11:15 am
@Navin
dell inspiratin 1525 is 43k without taxes….if u r in mumbai other taxes such as vat 4%…octroi 5.5% etc will be charged….so it comes to 50k+….i have looked on that option…..
@chotu cheeta
will amd turion 1.9GHz be able to run softwares like oracle, matlab and games like fifa 08 etc smoothly???
Choto Cheeta said
am February 1 2008 @ 5:17 pm
@Sabyasachi
It does… see, as I already wrote, its just not the processor which actually makes the system performance better, the total configuration has the full effect…
So when u compare side by side a C2D with GMA 950 and a X2 with nvidia 7150, over all the AMD system which performs better than the C2D…
but then again compare a C2D with a Nvidia 8400 GM and same ammount of RAM, now u may see the C2D is runing better than AMD…
So in your case, can u afford the dell 1530 with atleast nvidia 8400 and 2 GB ?? then go for that, where as if u cant, then Compaq 6608au with 2 GB ram at Rs. 35200/- incl TAX seems better and cheaper option

Thanks for your valuable input……I went and tried HP dv6701au for around half n hour at the mall, at a time i worked with six application together (games, scanning, search, web, excel etc) just a casual test….it worked all fine.
also machine didnt get too hot as thought of earlier….
i was fully convinced…….and finally booked dv6701au (41k with cordless mouse as freebies frm RPG cell u comm, mulund)….also the other alternative v6608au provided was really good.
laptop has 2 partition c: with around 135 gb and d: (recovery) with around 20 gb.
Now can we without formatting add one more partition ?
say c: 40gb d:120 gb and 20 gb was earlier recovery (as data management would be good)…..i heard in XP it was possible….is it also managable in vista?
And what is the recovery drive functionality (things bit clear from the name itself but details would be appreciated)
The difference between compaq v6608au and hp dv6701au(just for info)
1. compaq is a running but old model, hp one is the latest.
2.no webcam in compaq, hp has integrated vga cam
3.additional media control in hp (also travel remote included)
4.compaq has vista home basic, hp has vista home premium
5.hp has better imprint finish comparatively.
6.compaq is upgradeable upto 2gb, hp till 4gb
conclusion–if all decoration is not required and if u fine with vista basic then compaq is the best deal in 35k (also 1000 rs freebies was aval with it) else u can go with hp at 41k
@ sabyasachi
No my final price itself was 43k exact.
Dell provides the option of taking notebook without VAT (sales tax). delivery is bit delayed but it was ok for me as it saved around 2k.
For octroi of 4% (around 2k), I opted to take delivery outside mumbai area i.e. at my friends place in vashi (navi mumbai), so I saved on octroi also.

Hi Choto,
Thanks for the advice. I’d have gone for the v6608au, but a friend of mine might be making a trip to Singapore next month, and he’s offered to get me a laptop from there if he does. My budget then extends to ~1200SD (1SD being around 28Rs). In this bracket, what model can you suggest? I’ve done a bit of looking around myself, and I’m dead keen on the HP Dv6516Tx (C2D, 2GB Ram, 256MB Nvidia 8600, 15.4″ screen, etc etc). Could you give me the model numbers of similar confy HP pc’s from the Dv6500 to Dv6700 series? An Nvidia is a must, along with minimum 1GB Ram and 15.4″ screen….Any other models you can recommend? Many thanks!!!

I am looking for a laptop which can be configured by me. I mean I don’t need the vista but I do play games so the inbuilt rating in Vista for that laptop should be high(of installed).I have original XP Prof. CD with which I am much comfortable than Vista. The latter is much more resource hogging.I can use the ram for some serious gaming.I am yet to find a Athlon dual core laptop.Dell Inspiron has been discontinued.
Can you suggest me something.I am impressed with Compaq C702TU review bit again I need the OS.I will reformat and install everything from Top to bottom so laptop with linux will do.
What I need is good gaming configuration which will play latest strategy games like AOE3 or Might N Magic5, ,racing games like NFS Carbon, shooting games like Call Of Duty4,supports DX10 and video editing software like Pinnacle.DVD RW,Bluetooth and man i need a lot of usb ports.

Hello Sam,
Congrats on your notebook purchase..
See the notebook comes with Vista Home Premium, which is a legal OS but installed from System builders kit..
So though you have a legal vista, but you do not have any Installation source.. Instade of that you have a 20 GB recovery partition.. Which would help you in case any system problem relating to OS to restore back to the original state..
There are few way for partitioning, the one I prefer would using Windows OS installation DVD, but which you don’t have at present.. So you have to think for the 2nd way which is doing it on fly..
Softwares like, Partition Manager 9.0 Personal are ment for this job allowing you to partition even when you are running windows on single Root partition and that too directly from running Windows OS… It supports Windows XP as well as Vista

Hello Solly,
I am really sorry but we cant discuss about that, Apple MAC OS X ToS do not allow any one to install the OS in any hardware apart from which comes from Apple only !!
Therefore its illegal to install or try to install MAC OS X any where apart from a Apple MAC
Thank you.

hey i never received any replies after waiting so many weeks

hi choto,
i am buying a desktop system…i do have knowledge of hardware and all those been posted so far…but i need a guidance from you regarding price..
now after march i have heard prices would fall down due to budget…i am expecting a system with high end configuration as i am going to run servers like jboss, tomcat, and many applications related to java & defenetly good games
i have budget of 30k-32k ..and i am expecting atleast 2gb ram,17?or more inch monitor ,512mb graphic card, quadra, harddisk lets say 160gb or more, good fsb of ram with motherboard, dvd writer+mouse+keyboard+ups is by default
i know amd is economical but let me tell you it heats up fast and motherboard may damage as it happened with me(i have amd turion x2)anyway..i am also looking to expand mine motherboard to more than 4 gb in future so new motherboard with max 8gb ram will be good..
Could you please give me the exact configuration of a desktop in that range or near to it…
Thanks a lot of it….i guess my answer will come up fast…sorry for reading such a long message

Hello Anil,
You should concentrate more on processing power !!!
My vote would be with Dell, however do note dell prices are lot different from what they show on their web site, they add a lot of TAX and duty upon it
Anyway, take a look at these models,
Dell 1525 with a T8100 + 4GB + Intel dranft N wireless + 15.1″ 1440×900 display - @ 50k (all)
Lenovo 3000 Y410 775782Q - @ 52.5k (all)
HP Pavilion dv3005TX - @ 52k (all)
once again because of 45mn platform Dell would be a idle choice !!
thank you,

Hello AKU,
Yes, compaq C702TU with 1GB can run HD 720p but yeah it needs 1 GB system RAM under vista to run the HD movie under its own display or even with an External 19″ TFT
However, please note, this is a discontinued product, thus, buy it if u are getting it in a really cheap deal or else, better to look for this model of Acer, which retails at around Rs. 22.5k all in Kolkata, India. market.
Acer 5315

2. IDE like Eclipse

4. Multimedia softwares like Adobe Premier Pro and Adobe Photoshop
5. Games like Rainbow6, FIFA, Quake3, NFS etc.

Hi choto,
I’m going today to (hopefully) pick up the Compaq V3749AU. I think its quite a decent choice, but the dealer’s sowing seeds of doubt in my parents’ minds. He claims that a- Its outdated, b- Its got poor resale value, and c- Compaq’s gonna discontinue the model.
IMO point a is a load of bull, since anything with and X2 Turion, 2GB ram and an Nvidia 7150 should be nice and future-proof for the next 2-3 years, atleast. Especially for the average college student. Could you clear points b (not so important) and c? And is there a better pick in the budget segment (32-35k) ?
Many thanks,
Cyc

Hello Rahul,
Do you need 13″ models or 15″ ones ?? As see if you really mean portability, the 14 / 15″ models are some what in heavier side and when you move a lot it would feel extra burden on your shoulder, hence what is your purpose ??
