Hosting shift for ChotoCheeta.com
Recently I have shifted the hosting for ChotoCheeta.com
As for few fact, ChotoCheeta.com is running WordPress bloging software version 2.3.1. Both the new and older host run Linux hosting with CPanel 11 and offer phpMyAdmin for MySQL database management…
How to shift / Change hosting for Wordpress blog / web site ?
Quite frankly speaking, its easier than it sounds. All you need to do is follow few steps…
Step 1
Backup the database of the running blog from the running host useing phpMyAdmin !!! How do you do that ?? Just look for icon in your Cpanel which says phpMyAdmin
as you click on it it will lauch the phpMyAdmin control panel… There at main window please click Database
![]()
Select the Database which is used to the WordPress installation….
Now at the next page click the export tab, which is located top of the page…

On the page page leave all values to default settings… there make sure you click select all (refer to the bellow image) to select all available tables…
Bellow of that column you may find the save options, Select Save as a file (refer to the bellow image) and also type should be ZIP (as an expert you may select any which you prefer) as it will compress the Database to a downloadable size if its one big in size….
Step 2
Backing up the WordPress content folder and the root htaccess file content…
Log in to your old hosting account via FTP.. and download the directory wp-content from the public root…
Backup the .htaccess file of the public root too…
Step 3
Change of the domain’s Name server….
Go to you domain control panel, which may be Yahoo / Godady / Domain site or any other…
How do you change your domains name servers… Click bellow service provider names to learn how may you do it…
Yahoo / Godaddy / or Google for your service providers documents or you may request me by posting here as comment…
This action may take up to 72 hours to complete… where as usually it takes max of 30 mins in most cases…
You may see free online DNS tools to check whether the change has reflected over internet or not… Tools as DNSstuff.com or DNSreport.com !!!
Once you see that its reflected in such web services now you may try at your place too.. if you have a connection in which you log in via dialing user name pw, like ADSL / Cable or Dial up then DC and re-login to see whether you can ping your domain and get response from the new server !!!
If you do then go to the step 4
Step 4
Install the Wordpress and restore the Database along with the content folder….
Download and install the WordPress software to your new host… Just the Wordpress software… Once done, copy the .htaccess of the old host to the new host… and upload and replace the wp-content folder in the new host….
Now you are ready to restore the Database… once again login to the phpMyAdmin… follow step 1 to reach the new database which you have created at the new host to install the fresh Wordpress software…
This time around Click Import instead of Export as show in the step 1 and browse your database file from local system which you have downloaded from the old host as backup and click GO…
Once you have successfully imported the database you can now start using the Wordpress blog from he new host !!!
Note some time it gives error on creating table when you import the database, in that case, drop all tables of the new DB, and then try to import the older database…

Instead of backing up data from phpmyadmin, you can use backup tab to backup database and files and restoring from new host control panel using backup tab. I generally find this easy then backing up from phpmyadmin

I was about to say what Ashok said. Use backup + restore if you are moving from cPanel to cPanel. Far more convenient.
If it’s other control panel, then of course you better follow the manual backup steps described above.

I wanted to make a local copy of my blog on my laptop. I have installedwordpress over wamp but I tried to do the restore as per your method . It does not work. I have installed some plugins because of that on my blog there are some tables which are created by those plugins.

I dont think windows can run .htaccess mod
for a WP installation you may need .htaccess for the plug in so, if you need a local copy I guess the local host should be on Linux platform

Hello Alok,
Thank you for your comments and glad to know about your success !!
Seems that you are with HostGator, is it a dediacted box or with shared hosting !!
Just for discussion, I didnt have any luck with shared for this blog, because of higher visit count and bandwidth usage were forced to think for VPS !!
Thanks.

Hey mate,
It is a shared one only, I am having the reseller plan. My site is not so old that I will have to consider that much, actually when I started my blog that time I was not so aware from all these stuff so I purchased one reseller plan considering it’s cheaper price, but from then I was facing lot’s of stuff with them. Meanwhile I purchased a reseller plan from Hostgator and I was always looking to change the server, but I was having a bit of fear in my heart, but ultimately with the help of ur guide I got the success. Your site is really good and I liked it. I hope you are too from India, might be from Kolkata, yes I checked the whois. I was too there a few year back in Tollygunge.
