Quick Review - Super flop View Sonic vx1932wm

Before I start I would say a simple word, it was one of the worst purchase in Computers, I ever made…

I bought the much talked View Sonic vx1932wm 7 days ago… I did a lot of extensive testing and one thing for sure, this is one the worst purchase of my life under computer segment !!!

The View Sonic VX1932WM

The TFT vx1932wm

Features

The Key features are,

19″ WideScreen TFT
2ms Response Time
2000:1 Contrast Ratio

But wait, lets look at those features once again closely, is view sonic saying the truth ?? No doesnt seem that it is !!! As if one can take a look at View Sonic World Wide Site, one can see what is the real truth..

.

The advertised response time is 2ms in View Sonic India Web site as seems they dont care much about Indians doing some thing about such false information….

The problem with LCD segment comparing with other computer hardware that there is no international guide line on TFT / LCD Rating systems, VESA - http://vesa.org/ is working towards the goal to provide us with one single guide line on rating or benchmarking TFTs…

So if you can take a look at view sonic USA web site for the product page of VX1932wm, you can see that the 2ms response time is Gray to Gray response time, which is not one industry standard way to rate the TFT response timing, which we can trust is the Black-White-Black value, and in this case with vx1932wm, it is 5ms…

.

What about the Contrast Ratio of 2000:1 ??

Once again we are deceived !!! The contrast Ration of 2000:1 advertised here is actually the Dynamic Contrast Ratio, not the actual Standard Ratio which is in fact 700:1… Same as vg1930wm !!! As with the response timings, the fact of contrast ratio is also not being shown at View Sonic India rather one may need to refer to the view sonic USA web site for the product page of VX1932wm

You may read more about Contrast Ratio here, even if you have a very high Dynamic Contrast Ratio the performance of the TFT will not increase due to its static contrast ratio which is the standard way to rate… in this same of vx1932wm the static ratio is 700:1 !!!

So now if you can review the product sepcs once again for VX1932wm and VG1930wm, you can see there is nothing to separate them on papers apart from their looks and price…

What about Real time looks and performance ??

VG1930WM  VX1932WM

I tested both side by side, Main test hardwares,

C2D E6600
X2 4800+

ATi x1600 Pro
XFX 8400 GS
XFX 8800 GTS

Softwares,

Windows XP SP2 with all Display drivers uptodate
Windows Vista Ultimate with all Display drivers uptodate

HD Content 720p
HD Video 1080p (1980×1280)
Fear (Game)
Unreal Tournament
NFS WM

The Vx certainly looked better than vg, but in performance vg really out performed the vx I bought… The VX1932WM I had (and have) was the latest (-3) version (vx1932wm-3)

I tested them both under AMD based system and Intel platform and Nvidia and ATi Platform… and difference is quite obvious in case of vx in all test compare to vg !!!

The main problem is with Ghosting effect… In case of HD Video and Game there was ghosting effect, but a simple test is just running the windows screen saver called “Windows Energy” the ghosting effect was really visible in that case, when in a re-sized window under vista when I moved the mouse on transparent title bar I saw ghost trails of the mouse…

Where as in all these area VG performed flawlessly..

Yet I am to judge the local support to see what can be done with the TFT, whether to replace with a same display or downgrade to better performer vg series, so will give my verdict on the issue in next couple of days…

But initial thought, VG1930wm is what one should buy in case of the 19″ TFT segment !!!

Update 13th January 2008 :-

As it seems, if you are a View Sonic vx1932wm or vg1930wm owner, you would be asked to wait for 3/4 or upto 5 months till you get a replacement product !!! As in my case also, till date there is no glimps of the replacement unit… Every time I comunicate with View Sonic Support, I get information that there are no suply for vg and vx seriese !!!

What to buy then at budget of Rs. 10000/- (INR) or 11000/- (INR) (USD $ 250 to $ 300) as WideScreen 19″ TFT ??

One quick option seems to be with Dell… The Dell 1908WFP, Dell SE198WFP, Dell E198WFP

VG1930WM has got posiive reviews all over the net. The only issue i find with that model is the lack of hdcp support.

I’m now confused between Viewsonic VG1930WM, LG L194WT and Dell 198WFP. Samsung 940/920BW models are no longer available . Could some one help me to take a decision?

The moral of the story is not to buy LCD just based on specification advetersed, rather make sure you test it before you buy, if the dealer says no then discard them from ur list.

I myself have gone through much same issues when I shifted last year to LCD use.

Nice review. Been hearing a lot of complaints on the ViewSonic LCDs, can’t believe their quality has gone that down. Their CRTs were one of the best. With every product like this, ViewSonic is losing their reputation(some would say it’s already lost), funny how couple of bad products can totally destroy the rep.

Go for dell, give dell people a call and 1st find out if your area is covered by their on site support or not… If it is, then do a little bargaining and go for dell.. !!!

This product is also the worst computer purchase i have ever bought. I was getting ghost effects and “fringes” on all games and videos. Come to find out, with nvidia, and most graphic cards, the native display of this monitor 1440×900 is NOT supported. Instead the drivers display it as 1440×1050. This causes the slide or fringe effect. When I called Viewsonic, they said there was nothing “wrong” with the monitor and i should contact Nvidia for making a “faulty” display card. I’m sorry, you would think a company like viewsonic would release a product that met industry standards. So now i’m stuck with this POS or out $250 bc I
