Virtualization is a very interesting and effecting concept, it allows IT Professionals and Developers to test some thing 1st hand on Virtualized environment but in real time and 1st hand to teach and prepare them self for the New Technology of software which they have developed or wants to develop under them…
Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 is a free Virtualization software to allow all users to Virtualized any Windows platformed application or task…
Virtual PC helps users in many other way, like,
Running legacy applications in a virtual machine which may be running older version of the compatible OS instead of a new operating system which you have physically installed in your system…
You may read more of the benefits of Virtualization on Microsoft Web Site
OS under a OS
From END user point a view this is one of the main usage of Virtual PC 2007, that you may run different OS under your own native physical OS…
On the picture you see above is Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 is running Windows XP under native physical OS Windows Vista… This allows various tests and application to be run at Windows XP without installing them under Native Windows Vista….
Microsoft Virtual PC 2007
Microsoft virtual PC 2007 is one of the leading and free software to run such setup… Its a Free software download, you may Click bellow links to obtain the setup file (note there are 2 versions, one for 32 bit and one for 64 bit)…
System Requirements
VPC 2007 can be run under 400 MHz based P-II processors also, but that’s not expected, see in one dumb word powerful system is better, so 1 GHz with 512 MB RAM I would say is good to run it under Windows XP to Virtualize Windows 98 / XP or 2000 or Server 2003, where as if you want to run it under Windows Vista 1.5 GHz or rather Dual Core is recommended with 1 GB RAM at-least….
Where as Under any condition would you need a lot of HDD space because the Virtual Installation of an OS will also need same amount of space like physical OS…
Try to keep the Partion where you would store the VPC images as NTFS…
Installation and Setup Process…
After you obtain the setup file just run the installation by double clicking it, pretty straight forward job… Once you install it, now the configuration comes… Which I would try to explain step by step and would try to Write a tutorial on Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 operation…
When you launch the VPC 2007 you would get a window like this

At this point you dont have any OS environment setup, so to setup one environment, Click New,
^^ Click Next to Proceed….
^^^ Select Creat a new Virtual Machine and then Click Next….
Now Browse for a Location to save the VPC File, as it will need same amout of space like a normal OS, so I would say browse and select a Partition other than your OS drive which as lot of space… So once done Click Next…
Now Select the OS tipe, see though it says other but VPC 2007 only works with Windows OSes as I tried couple of linux, didnt work out well… anyway under my Case its Server 2003 what I intetend to run in VPC… So after you have selected your os, click next…
^^^ You may adjust the RAM size, alocate more if you have bigger RAM on physicall system and you plan to run Resourse hungry application under the VPC OS installation…
^^^ At the Next screen asign HDD value…. usually its just a value as by default un-like VMware VPC doesnt offer you any option to pre-reserve HDD space, so would can enter any value you like OS will use only when it needs to use… Usually I asign around 20 GB (20000 MB)… Click Next… and then Click Finish to Complete the wizered !!!

Also, VPC do support booting from CD using the available CD / DVD ROM of the PC.. So can you please try and see if you can start the installation via booting from WinXP installation CD ROM ?
