Microsoft Virtual PC 2007

Now your virtual PC work space main windows would look like this,

VPC

So now Click File then option to some advance settings of the VPC software…

VPC

Now there enable the Hardwrae virtualization if available…

VPC

Now back at the main VPC Window, right click on your VPC Iteam you just have setup, in my case Its win2k3 ,

VPC

Here you may modify settings as like RAM size, networking settings and other stuff, how at this point for a new VPC image you need to just enable the Hardware virtualization if available…

VPC

Now interesting feature of any virtualization softwares are you can start the booting from your physical drive of from a ISO file saved on desktop, so suppose you have download a OS like suppose Windows Server 2003 SP2 as in ISO format, so you may load the ISO as Bootable CD/DVD in the VPC directly…

So Start the VPC image… Click on CD and either capture one ISO bootable image by browsing for in your HDD or insert a Installation Bootable Disk in any or your Systems physical drive and capture it… Once done Now Click Advance and then Ctrl+Alt+Del to resset the VPC….

rest is just like normal OS installation … So carry on with the installation of your OS in side the VPC….

Post Installation Settings

Once you have completed the setup, dont install any Physical systems drivers in side Virtual PC Guest OS…

rather Click, Install or update Virtual Machine Additions… as they will act as Drivers in side the VPC OS…

I found VirtualBox to be much efficient.
And it run linux too . :p

Ashish  on November 5th, 2007

+1 for VirtualBox! It is easy to use, supports non Microsoft OS, low on resources, size only ~18 MB. A lil bit buggy but still a very good freeware!

For free virtualization, VMWare Server is a free product. Supports Windows XP/2003/Vista, Linux (Redhat, Fedora, Ubuntu, SUSE), FreeBSD, and Solaris 9 and 10.

It actually supports MANY MANY operating systems, as it’s emulation is extremely accurate and compatible.

I use it to do OS development :)

I installed virtual pc 2007 on win2003 server (Host) the guest is win2000. When I started the guest OS the host cpu runs at 100%. After that, I installed virtual pc 2004 (where the win2000 was originally created) and I have the same response 100% cpu utilization and the gust OS seems to be starting forever (in both cases).

What could this be for and what can I do ? Thanks.

wonderful and complete guide for virtual pc setup.

Well i expected little bit high with virtual pc, but i felt some disadvantages.
-My resolution wont with my native resolution (1680*1050) even in full screen mode in my 22″ LG LCD. May be am doing something wrong.
-I thought of two OS at once, but after installation i felt that i can access only 1 drive (virtual). It wont allow me to access files from my Host OS. Again may be am missing something.
-I installed, 64bit version of microsoft virtual pc 2007 on my Vista Ultimate ( host OS ) and installed XP_SP3 as my guest OS, with 1gb ram alloted from my total of 4GB ram. Now i feel, my vista goes slow.
-I tried to copy paste some files from my host os to virtual os, but failed.

Overall, am more than happy with my new experiment from this useful post. It was the awesome moment when i saw two OS at same time. As per your words ” it allows IT Professionals and Developers to test some thing 1st hand on Virtualized environment but in real time and 1st hand to teach and prepare them self for the New Technology of software which they have developed or wants to develop under them…”

Seeking for some more new experiments in future.

Rahul

Are there any plans to add USB support to Virtual PC 2007 or a subsequent product in the future?

Mitch  on August 8th, 2008

Can I run windows server 2003 and run windows xp and have the server 2003 acts as a DC and do networking with the XP box logging into the 2003 box…all in in a virtual environment. My host OS is Vista. I think I can do it if my host os was 2003 and all my virtual machines were xp.

Thanks

SWAP FILE ERR – When trying to install XP under Vista, when I run the ‘winnt.exe’ file from the virtual DOS prompt of Virtual PC 2007, I get a blue screen which says there isn’t enough space for a swap file. I’ve directed the set to a space that has plenty of HD room, allocated even 500mb of memory..no juice…keep getting the XP install err ‘NO SWAP FILE SPACE’. My drives have more empty space than full space.

This program doesn’t work on Vista SP2..Business. Also according to the PC 2007 website, the prog isn’t compat with all Micro OS.

Which application gives this error, is it inside the VPC operation or it is Windows Vista which is showing this error ?

Also, VPC do support booting from CD using the available CD / DVD ROM of the PC.. So can you please try and see if you can start the installation via booting from WinXP installation CD ROM ?

Thanks,
