Difference Between Intel core 2 duo vs Intel dual core vs Intel Pentium D

Core 2 Duo Logo Intel Pentium D Logo Intel Pentium Dual Core

Many people are confused what exactly the difference between Intel Core 2 Duo and Between Intel Pentium D or Intel Dual Core processors….

I would try to explain from a END user point a view rather not going in to details architecture over view…

The Simple facts are,

All Core 2 Duo Processors are Dual Core Processors..
All Pentium D Processors are Dual Core Processors..
All Intel Dual Core Processors are Dual Core Processors…

Pentium D is nothing but 2 Prescott Processors side by side… runs very hot, not a good OverClocker…

Intel Core 2 Duo processors are next gen processors from Intel on 65 nm platform… developed from Ground up with new Architecture called Core… so they are whole new Processors just Jump like Pentium 2 to Pentium 3 or Pentium 4… Expect one Core 2 Duo Lowest End Processors like E4400/E4300 taking up and beating Intel Pentium D 3.8 GHz ones with ease … runs damn cool and super over clocker…

Intel Dual Core Processors are just launched striped down version of Core 2 Duos.. there are 2 in Market for Desktop range, E2140 runs at 1.6 GHz with 1 MB L2 and 800 MHz FSB and E2160 with 1.8 GHz with same specs of E2140…. these are not Pentium D rather they are same batch like Core 2 Duo based on the new Core Technology…. they perform same like Core 2 Duos but they were launched with a very low price to counter the market of super low cost but high performer AMD X2 range line up to AMD X2 4000….

hello..

i will a laptop very soon. so i found that lenovo is providing dual core T2080 and iBall is providing core2 Duo T5300, price range is more or less same…

which one to buy.?? Processor speed is same for both. resolution is more or less same. cache memory for the 2 model is 1 MB and 2 MB respectively. iBall is providing express card, 1.3mp camera, 160 GB, microphone. lenovo provides infrared port, 120 GB, S-video.

Choto Cheeta  on October 22nd, 2007

Core 2 Duo is better than Dual Core anyday, but its also expensive !!! so if you need Core 2 Duo processing power or if u have afford Core 2 Duo then certainly opt for Core 2 Duo…

in C2D Notebook Range think for Dell 1420 with upgrade to 2 GB RAM and 8400 GM.. its a 14.1″ Notebook and with those updates it will come at around Rs. 45k incl TAX in India when you buy from Local Dell Store or hardware dealer !!

arun  on October 24th, 2007

and what abt core duo ?????????

Rahul Saha  on October 25th, 2007

me in kolkata, do u know any Local Dell store, here..
and as far my knowledge, i heard that its MRP is >55k, r u sure that it will cost me around 45k… and i will be buying it by March so have lot of option… and if i donot update the RAM to 2GB and keep it 1GB… is it fine.. keep it mind that i will not play game.. but might need graphics memory for Greater Higher level Program…
and i am also thinking about “Acer – Aspire 5584NWXMi” battery backup is 3hr, sound really well… i want to keep my budget around 40k…

ABCD  on October 29th, 2007

U wont get a dell store anywhere in the world.

The only way to buy a dell lappy is via their online system.

if u are really interested do it fast, as they are giving some lappys at discounted prices, available till 2nd November.

Zak  on November 14th, 2007

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 1420 – Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 120GB HDD which cost me around CD$1050. I think it’s a good deal from dell, not sure if its valid in India or anywhere else. Currently I’m using a Dell Latitude D610 and I thinnk Dell is way better than HP or Acer, but hey do your home work before you choose your brand. Good luck!

Eddie  on November 20th, 2007

You failed to mention about the new Pentium D CPU’s.They are 65NM,and produce way less heat than the 8xx series. They are to Cedar Mill CPU’s running together.:D

I’m planning to buy a laptop..
so far I found lenovo Y500 77614EQ, fine. it’s around 51,000 in chennai including 4% VAT and with 1 GB extra RAM ( originaly it’s coming with 1 GB alone).
can you please tell me, if I go for any other brand laptop like DELL or SONY, can I get a better deal. if yes can you please suggest me other models.
Thanks in advance

Choto Cheeta  on November 21st, 2007

Consider Dell 1400 or 1420, I would prefer dell because of price… How ever Sony is really out performs all in their design but, when you talk about performance sony is certainly not the brand to look for..

So its Dell 1420 with 8400 and 2 GB RAM, which can come in around Rs. 52k, but if you want some gaming then think of Dell 1520

:-)

shitanshu  on November 22nd, 2007

thanks dost, I think dell 1520 is better, because I want 15’4 screen.
what is “8400″ you said it’s coming with this laptop.

Choto Cheeta  on November 22nd, 2007

8400 means the grfx card which is an optional upgrade with 1420 and with 1520 too… If you are planing to run vista and some low gaming 8400 is a good dx 10 option when compare to the onboard grfx…

Now, I personally would say, dont think for 1520 just because of 15″ display !! both 14″ and 15″ will run at 1280×800 resolution so, just 1″ will not going to give you any difference, but 1520 is heavy when compairing to 1420…

Buy 1520 only if you want 8600 GT as your grfx card !!!

I am confused between Compaq V6608 AU & Dell Inspiron 1420. Which one is better & better value for money. Is AMD Athlon 64X2 equivalent or a bit nore then Intel Core Duo & Is AMD Turion 64×2 equivalent to Intel Core 2 Duo. And if I go for Vista will 1GB be enough for my need if it is a Core 2 Duo. Also can you tell me the all inclusive prices of Compaq V6604AU, V6608AU & Dell Inspiron 1420

Choto Cheeta  on November 30th, 2007

Hello Sahil,

For your needs, this Acer 4710z is more than enough and right now I is priced at Rs. 31000/- (all)…

Next in line is the Compaq V6604AU which would be Rs. 34000/- (all) it is also a nice deal because of pricing and it comes with 15.4″ display

Where as C2D model of Dell 1420 is around Rs. 38k all which is uch costlier than Compaq…

So yes, if possble go for Compaq V6604AU..

Thank you..

I have no compleet knowladge about core2uo but am sure it is better than dualcore by its function

Bashu  on December 8th, 2007

Hi i have bought

1) ASUS motherboard[P5GC-MX] supporting Pentium core-2 Duo/Pentium D processors 2) Pentium DUal-core[E2140]

The stupid mistake was that I assumed Pentium-D to be Pentium Dual-core

Still most of things work fine[MS-word, PowerDVD, winamp..etc] till now.[I am using it from past one week]

But I have faced 2 too
1) While installing the Sound card driver[provided along with the motherboard CD] at the end of the installation
it failed — my service provider fixed it.[He un-installed something. After that he had to install everthing which he had
installed on top of Windows-XP]

2) Nero Express 7 installation also crashes[which I got along with my samsung DVD-writer]
— to be solved

Now my questions
1) Are the above 2 problems because of processor mismatch?
2) Should I replace processor ?

Thanks in advance

regards
bashu

Choto Cheeta  on December 8th, 2007

To be honest the processor you have purchased is OK but not the motherboard… But its past so no need to worry about that any more… E2140 should work fine, even though the motherboard didn’t include its name as supported processor but still it should work fine as E2140 (Pentium Dual Core) is nothing but a strip down cost effective version of Core 2 Duo processors…

So there are no, Motherboard processor miss-match…

Now why those 2 problems came up… ??

When you install sound driver, please note your motherboard uses Realtek HD audio for which under Windows XP you need to have an optional OS patch KB888111…

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111

This is one optional update only issued to those windows xp users who uses Realtek HD audio solutions… Therefore please download KB888111 and install it before you install your audio driver !!!

Please visit asus web site at this link to download and install all up2date drivers for your motherboard, http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P5GC-MX also make sure you update the BIOS of the motherboard for complete support with all hardware you are using !!!

About Nero, well there can be many reason, can you please tell me what exactly you have wanted to do for which you find nero crashing ??

i want toa desktop pc but i am confused processor selection.i am confused in intel dual core 3Ghz and intel core 2 duo 2.0 Ghz processor. tell me which is faster and better and how? some sellers said that there is a transistor heating problem in dual core 3Ghz processor thats why intel has stopped its production. Is it true on etchnical grounds?

Choto Cheeta  on December 11th, 2007

Intel do not make any 3.0GHz dual core processor… They are called Intel Pentium D and which is different from the Intel Dual Core processors which are known to us as E2140 / E2160…

If you read the artical you may see I have already given explanation that all these Pentium D, Intel Dual Core and Intel Core 2 Duo are by nature Dual Core processors, but its the brand name which Intel uses like Pnetium D and Intel Dual Core…

hello sir……..the info put up onthis site seems to be good……i m planning ot buy a laptop but m a bit confused abt. which one is better an amd turion 64x2dual core (1.9ghz,upto1600fsb)or a core2duo processor……….please clarify abt.whiah one is faster nd how?????????????i need a laptop for pragramming in c,c++,java and for entertainment too………….

Choto Cheeta  on December 30th, 2007

Hi Amit,

It all depends on the budget you have !!! See you just dont buy a processor you buy a full system which contains many other device… so even if you have a better processor still you may see your system is under performing because of the poor supporting hardwares…

So suppose if you have a budget or Rs. 35,000/-, in that case you see Acer 4710 which is a Core 2 Duo model and again Compaq 6608AU which is an AMD Turion X2 model…

Between then over all its the compaq V6608AU… in kolkata this model sales at Rs. 35,200/- incl VAT with 2 GB of RAM (1GB x 2 stick)…

Now if you have a budget of Rs. 45k or more in that case yes, go for Core 2 Duo only, say about Dell 1420 / 1520 or HP DV6515TX

When going for Core 2 Duo model, make sure you get a m,odel which comes with GMA x3100 or higher like Nvidia 8400 GM or such… !!!

shekhar  on December 31st, 2007

Good one. Thanks for the information.

Uttam  on December 31st, 2007

Hi Choto Cheeta,
I visited Intel site and saw the comparison between different procesors (core 2 duo). I see that except the FSB and processor speed there is no other considerable difference between the various series of processor. My budget is 45K. The T7200(which seemed to me as the optimum series among all) series notebooks are costing 50K +. I have come across an add of Compaq, which has 2GB RAM, T5450 series processor(1.6Ghz), which just fits in my budget. Is this config a good bet.
Please also clarify if AMD Thurion is better or the C2D(T5450) is better in price/performance ratio.

Choto Cheeta  on December 31st, 2007

Are you looking for a 14″ notebook or 15″ one ?? see Dell 1420 with GMA x3100 or 8400GM and Intel T5450 would be better than any 14″ AMD option but as i have said, its the full system which you buy so, what are your needs ??

Uttam  on December 31st, 2007

I will be using it more for entertainment purpose, movies and games..,15′ screen so which one is better/faster AMD Turion or T5450

Uttam  on December 31st, 2007

Also I would give a good thought for the “value for money”. I have read that AMD is very little slower compared to C2D. Seeing the price difference, I am puzzled, which one to go for.

Ashwin  on December 31st, 2007

I just purhcased a new comp wid config like Pentium D Dual Core processor 3ghz,ASUS P5GC-MX board, 250 gb Sata HDD, Nvidia 256mb 64bit grapix card.. wat i wan 2 knw is the Processor a dual core or is it just Pentium D processor while its only mentioned on the box as Pentium D Dual Core processor wid a logo of Pentium D.

Choto Cheeta  on December 31st, 2007

Hello Ashwin,

There is no 3.0 GHz processor from Intel Dual Core brnad, how ever yes there is Pentium D, which is a dual core processor with brand name Pentium D…

So it is a Pentium D processor what you have… most likelly it is a Pentium D 925

thank you…

Choto Cheeta  on December 31st, 2007

@Uttam

Though you have a budget of Rs. 45k but for your needs I would point towards, Compaq V6608AU with 2 GB RAM… In Kolkata it is Rs. 35200/- incl VAT and 2 GAB RAM (1Gb x 2)…

Now you still have Rs. 10k in hand, I would suggest buy a 19″ TFT display, may be vg1930wm or if the budget doesnt permits then 19″ va1912wm which you may enjoy when you are at home for movies :)

Choto Cheeta  on January 2nd, 2008

Both Core 2 Duo and AMD x2 supports x64 platform for Windows Vista / XP / 2003 / or any other OS…

Now if you talk about E6300 vs X2 4000 I would say just as processor Intel C2D E6300 is better, however its just not the processor which make up the system… So, AMD x2 4400+ with ASUS M2NPV-VM or M2A-VM is far better than Intel E6300 with 946 based motherboard !!!!

saurabh  on January 5th, 2008

hey buddy,

i m planning to upgrade ma machine..The configuration for the proci and mobo is something like this..i want to knw ur opinion and advice on this one..
Processor:Intel 925+ 3.00 GHz Dual Core

Mo/Bo:Intel D945 GGCR LGA 775 – DDR2
OR
Intel D946 GZIS LGA 775 – DDR2
Here i would also like to knw ki whether i can compromise on my mobo for a better processor..(budget issues..)

Like…can i have Gigabyte Mo/bo Platform to support Intel Dual Core /Intel C2D 2.33 Ghz E6600

The two available ones are:

Gigabyte GA-8I865-GME LGA 775
Gigabyte AXPER XP-M5ARC410

Also ,Can u tell me which one of these CPUs is better and how ?!?!
1. Intel 925+ 3.00 GHz Dual Core Rs. 3925
2. Intel E6600 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo Rs. 7300

Choto Cheeta  on January 5th, 2008

Hi,

Please note, Core 2 Duo Processors are the best right now…

So always try to opt for a Core 2 Duo processors… but that doesnt mean you need to buy the highest end core2 range …

E4500 which is around Rs. 4700 is far better than any Pentium D range out there… and try to opt for at-least XFX 650i-Ultra which is Rs. 4800/- how ever doesnt come with any onboard grfx, so you need to buy even a basic grfx card to run your system… But this should the board to try for… (grfx card like XFX 8400 GS is Rs. 2500/- supporting DirectX 10)

Where as if you really low on budget then try for AMD based solution like X2 4800+ with M2NPV-VM or M2A-VM :D

ANd if you plan to run Intel with onboard grfx then try for ABit I-N73HD which comes with Nvidia 7100 and at Rs. 5000/-

This is a message to Choto Cheeta:
I am building a new computer for myself. I purchased motherboard ASUS P5GC-MX/1333 and today I went to the store to purchase 1 gig Memory and CPU. In question to the CPU, in the manual I read the CPU specification and it says LGA775 socket for Intel Core 2 Duo/Pentium D/Pentium 4/ Celeron D processors, I purchased Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor E2160 LGA 775, 1.80GHz 1MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB.

Could you plese tell me if this CPU I purchased will work on my motherboard I bought? I haven’t set it up yet, as I need to buy a mini case for it. As I said, I am going step by step to buying parts and then when I have all, put it together.
Please let me know.
Thanks,

Choto Cheeta  on January 12th, 2008

Hello Travis,

Yes any motherboard which supports LGA775 Core 2 Duo range will support E2xxx seriese Dual Core processor !!! So P5GC-MX will support E2160 Intel Dual Core….

Just a thought, system wont perform a good as you would expect… To be frank, E2140 / E2160 / E2180 range of Dual Core Processors are there to compete with AMD budget range solutions like X2 4200 or such… Now these Intel Dual Core range would performe upto the expected mark only when they are overclocked… Mind you, they are certainly capable enough to archive 50% OC under Intel default stock cooling !!!

The reason why I put up this thought because processor is certainly a good one, but the motherboard which comes 945 chipset is not the idle board which should have been used with Core 2 Duo / Dual Core (E2xxx) range !!!

Lowest end I would have prefered is XFX 650i Ultra with XFX 8400 GS if you are not a gamer or higher end grfx card if you are a gamer…

Thank you…

I have been noticing a problem, while copying from CD/DVD the system performance goes down. Even the music player cannot operate smoothly. The whole CPU cycles are used for copying.
Can somebody suggest the possible reason and solution.
Thanks in advance.

Choto Cheeta  on January 18th, 2008

Hello Ambar,

There can be few reasons, you need to check one by one, 1st and most likely is DMA (Direct Memory Access) feature of Windows XP is turned off…

How do you Check ??

To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager

1. Open Device Manager.

2. Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.

3. Right-click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.

4. In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if Available if the current setting is “PIO Only.”
If the drop-down box already shows “DMA if Available” but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must toggle the settings. That is:

Change the selection from “DMA if available” to PIO only, and click OK.

Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to DMA if Available.

Yes the 65nm E2xxx Intel Dual Cores are better than Pentium D 9xx processors, but do note, when you buy a E2xxx processor make sure you buy a mobo which comes with Over Clocking support…

At Stock 1.6 GHz the E2140 may bot perform as good as a new 65 nm Pentium D 3.6 GHz, how ever even cheap board like XFX 630i 7150 would allow one to over clock the E2140 to 2.2 GHz without any problem with default basic Intel given cooling !!! At even 2.0 GHz E2140 would out perform any Pentium D 65nm :)

hi,,
i want to buy a notebook,,
i’m doing sowtware engg so my basic need is java programing,,
right now i liked a compaq presario C739TU which has an intel dual core processor,1.6Ghz + 160 gb hdd + 512 mb RAM 15.4″ screen and asus motherboard,,
it costs me around 33K,,
i want the RAM to be upgraded to 1 GB which will cost some extra money,,

it also has inbuilt camera and wi-fi, no bluetooth and DVD-WR,,

do u find this a good deal ?
or nething else u can suggest,,

khushbu  on February 2nd, 2008

one more thing i’m confused abt is dat why is hp notebook having same config. costlier den compaq,,

and someone told me dat i shud nt buy AMD processor bcz my basic need is programming and not graphics related,,

is it true ?

Choto Cheeta  on February 2nd, 2008

@khushbu

Mam, please opt for a X2 model over Intel Dual Core… Intel Dual Core wont support x64 computting !!!

Compaq V6608AU at Rs. 35k with 2 gb ram :)

hows acer 4710z…does the linux os troublesome, iam not familiar with linux.also hows dell 1420…

hadzija  on February 9th, 2008

Just as the article stated above, the main difference between Core 2 Duo and Dual Core processors are the cache size (and some virtualization stuff your average Joe won’t even know it’s missing). And a much lower price for the Dual Cores. I own a Dual Core E2140, originally clocked 1.6Ghz, and run it at 2.66Ghz – no fancy coolers, no voltage modifications. And it doesn’t even get warm (!!). Every benchmark i tried places it in the same league as Core 2 Duo E6xxx series.

Avoid the Pentium D like the plague… power hungry, running very hot, and performance-wise much worse than the Core2Duo/DualCore processors.

iCalvyn  on February 10th, 2008

nice comparison..i like it…

arshad  on February 11th, 2008

Hi Choto,

I want to buy a laptop. I found hp pavillion dv2700 to be good one but I have two options one with dual core and other with core 2 duo with almost same frequency. Cost wise there is around 7k difference. Will you pls let me know how performance difference will be there between intel dual core and core 2 duo.

Thanks in advance

Choto Cheeta  on February 13th, 2008

@arshad

Hello Sir,

Intel Dual Core range for notebooks, the model number of which starts from Txxx are not 64 bit compatible…

So yes Intel Core 2 Duo range is better than a dual core, how ever there is another in between which is AMD X2 solution…

So, what are your usage, as it is possible that you may never use the extra power of Core 2 range processors :) and still ending up buying an expensive product !!!

Roy  on February 14th, 2008

Thx choto, at the end i bought dualcore E2160 1.8 GHz, my mobo is ECS P4M890T-M2, RAM 1 GHz, Geforce 8600 GT 256 MB, with that spec i can play all new games with high detail setting (almost all but not all setting) like Call of Duty 4, medal of honour:airborne, Dirt, not bad in frame rate… btw can my mobo use OS vista??? anyone who can share information i really appreciate ^_^ thxxx.

Roy  on February 14th, 2008

Btw can my mobo overclocks cpu? i think i saw in bios setting there’s an option for overclocking cpu, or am i wrong?? oops…

Choto Cheeta  on February 14th, 2008

Hello Roy :)

as you have 8600 :) so yes your motherboard would run vista :)

Now for Over Clocking, please boot in to bios and find if any option allowing increasing the processor FSB or Bus speed or External clock or any such :(

VIA chipset is not know to be a good over clocker anyway :(

Baishali  on February 15th, 2008

hello sir!
I am about to go to a new city in 8~9 months and so, I am thinking of buying a LAPTOP. My budget is 20000~25000 INR. I would be using it for web-surfing,chatting,mail and basic openoffice work…..I will be joining an IT company and so some office work will be done too…I cant say of what type…may be some programming….as I am joining as software engineer…..I also play the occasional game or two…..but not very high end games….And put in some music and movies too…again nothing hifi…
In future, I may run vista ultimate and office07 on it…
I want a laptop with at least 80gb hdd, 512mb ddr2ram and wireless internet connectivity…and dvd writer…screen size does not matter…
what do u suggest?

Baishali  on February 15th, 2008

Oh….and internet connection should be with datacard….
i think its called pcmcia or something….basically, should be internet on the go enabled!

Baishali  on February 15th, 2008

and I will upgrade the RAM to 2 gb and processor to core2duo and hdd to 160 gb some months after buying but not immediately during buying…….

so which laptop do you think is suitable for my need?
and if u can, could u plz state its price in kolkata right now?

Baishali  on February 15th, 2008

Waiting for ur valuable comments……
I hav narrowed down my requirements a bit….
chipset:intel 965gm express
processor:celeron 540m or 530m upgradeable to core2duo 800mhz
ram:533mhz 512 mb ddr2 upgradeable to 2gb at least
hdd:80gb upgradeable
optical drv:dvd writer dual layer 8x or 16x with or without lightscribe….
network:wireless net card socket…

Choto Cheeta  on February 15th, 2008

@Baishali

Manually it is not possible to upgrade notebook processors, what at max one can do is, chnage the Hard disk or the RAM… So sorry to inform you cant upgrade your processor !!

Compaq C702TU comes at Rs. 25,200/- with 1 GB RAM :) which will meet all your needs :) also, do take a look at Acer 4720z which also comes with same chipset as GL960 (GMA x3100) how ever with 160 GB HDD and Intel Dual Core processor at Rs. 30,500/- incl all TAX :)

Baishali  on February 16th, 2008

Thank you for your valuable comments!
I read some of the other blog topics also….
http://www.acer.co.in/acer/comparison/notebook_comparison.html
Sir, in the above link they have given the price of 4720z NWXmi and 4720z WXMi as 33.5 and 36 thousand…..
Again, Sir, the chipset used is 960 gl which has fsb of 533mhz but ram is 667 mhz…so it will clock down to 533…..and machine wont have full speed of ram…actually, this is the reason I want to go for 965gm coz it supports both 533mhz and 800 mhz fsb….

Baishali  on February 16th, 2008

Sir, I have a question…..
1.what exactly is a card reader in a laptop?
2.how do I know if I need a card reader or not?
3.If my laptop does not come with a card reader, can I buy and install one later in my laptop?

Baishali  on February 16th, 2008

some more…..
4.what is the difference between
a.SuperMulti 8X DVD±RW with Double Layer Support
b.SuperMulti 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support
5.what do they mean by double layer “support”? it just supports , ie we need xtra hardware to burn double layer or it actually burns double layer without xtra hardware?

Baishali  on February 16th, 2008

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01301275.pdf
Sir in this link, there is a pdf which is the service manual for Compaq c700 series notebooks…In page 81,82 (83,89)of the document, they have given the method for replacing processor……..Now as both the core2duo and celeron m processors run on lga775 type sockets, cant I replace my processor later on?
Anyways…I researched the C702tu on the web…I think its okay but I have a few doubts…..

1. If I run vista ultimate on celeron m530, will my lappy be extremely sluggish…..(I am accustomed to a 2.4ghz pentium running on 256 mb ddr…2005 bought……so will it be slower than that too????)
2. In case of the c702tu, max RAM after upgrade seems to be 1 gb…but I wanted a lappy where I can upgrade the Ram to 2gb at least….

Please clear my doubts…

better than the c702tu???
will I get the same price for 714 here in kol ?

Choto Cheeta  on February 16th, 2008

@Baishali

1.
Card read is some thing which allow you to take the SD / MMC card from mobile or digital camera and read the pictures or data in side :)

2.
Its a default :) so dont take much of a headache with it :) but as I say its a default and std option so why leave it :)

3.
it comes as external reader which plugs in to a USB port and allow you to read memory cards :) its Rs. 250/- in kolkata !!!

4.
double layer allow you to burn DVD 9 formats, read this in wiki about dvd formats !!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD

5.
There would be no warrenty when u carry this out !!! The desktop comes with socket LGA 775 the mobile unit have different socket… in India its pretty hard and really costly to find a retail Mobile Core2 range processor !!!

6.
Vista needs a min of 512MB how ever recomended is 1 GB… so with 1 GB and GMA x3100 it would run really fine for you…

7.
Tell me why do you need 2 GB RAM ?? buy the C702TU with 1 GB and that would help u to do any job u preffer :)

8.
Unfortunatelly we cant make out our own configuration !!! and no my frnd, we dont get USD conversion as that u think… if the USD value is mention 500 > which means it would be around Rs. 28k in India :(

Now if you need dual Core the Acer 4720z seems right for you at Rs. 31k :)

Thank you sir……for all the research….
Sir, I was thinking about 2gb coz at one point of time, I would like to run win vista ultimate ……so, with ultimate hogging most of the 1 gb of ram, I cant play any games(even the smaller ones, like aoe3 etc)..so I was going for 2gb….
sir, I just need one other piece of information…..
I have read that in compaq laptops, if there are two memory banks, the main bank comes below and the extended bank comes on top of it…..both of which come below the wlan card, I think…….Now can you tell me, if later I can install another extended bank on top of the main bank in my lappy so that I can upgrade to 2gb?
Or the bank is already there, but it can only run max 512 mb ?

Hello again Choto :)

Yup i know that my mobo ECS P4M890 is not good enough for performance, i see that in bios theres setting for multiplier cpu but in manual book it says “we are strongly recommend you dont overclock any hardware…” btw do u know how high E2160 can be overclock to?

Last thing i wanna ask if video card with interface PCIex 16x version 2.0 can work in mobo with pciex 16x ver. 1.0??? I only know from website that only pciex 16x ver. 1.1(in dual link capable mobo/crossfire or sli) can support vga pcix ver. 2.0

Choto Cheeta  on February 22nd, 2008

@Roy

There are very few cards today in market which is under PCI-E 2.0 interface :) however all these 2.0 interface cards are fully backward compatible :)

About Over Clocking the E2140, it is know to hit 2.2 – 2.4 GHz mark on stock intel cooling but in any case, every single setup is different, so its u, who is the best person to let all know that how high you can reach :)

Roy  on February 25th, 2008

Thx again choto :)
maybe later if i change my mobo with a higher performance then i will try to overclock it, btw in other forum (indonesian)i saw celeron D 420 1.6 Ghz can be overclocked into 2.2 Ghz.

Yup i already read from wikipedia PCI SIG about pciex 16x ver. 2.0 that graphic cards and motherboards which supports pciex 16x ver.2 can be work in version 1.x (1.0, 1.0a, 1.1)and vice versa… glad they say that :) hehe… but only few graphic cards pciex 16x ver.2 that have problem or cannot work well in pciex 16x ver.1.0a version.

My manual mobo book says : “pciex 16x slot is fully compliant to the pciex base specification revision 1.1″… does it mean that my pciex slot is version 1.1, choto???

Sorry bother u with other question outside this thread ^^ … now i know more about processor intel core2duo, pentium D & pentium dualcore… thx choto! I also find info in other website, specially from intel it self :) btw my mobo isn’t good for overclocking but if i did that with teorytically, (base of E2160 1,8 GHz, mobo support 533 MHz for RAM, 1 Gig DDR2 533), then i should get max 2.4 Ghz cpu speed… i use synchronous 1:1 (FSB : DRAM) 266 : 533. Vcore should not over 1,5v, maybe 1,3v or less…… if my mobo support RAM DDR2 667 then it could be 3GHZ!! hehe

Hello Dr. Rajesh,

I am really sorry to know about your lose… Make no mistake I do understand the pain of lossing important data (hard work)…

Really sorry to point that once gone, unlike mobiles, as off now, notebooks cant be traced…

….

Windows Vista vs Windows Xp, is a long debate, but its personal choice, as in back end, Vista is more secure OS than XP, where as many people still prefer the UI (under interface) of Windows XP over Vista…

I would say, take a look at this model of HP, HP Pavilion dv6703TX in Kolkata, with upgrade of warrenty from 1 year to 3 years, including all tax it costs Rs. 53,200/- :)

Usually price is just few thousands (3-5k) here and there. As the problem from buying AUS / States is it has to come with international warranty to get support in India.. In many case for international warranty you may be asked to pay extra money which makes the price quite equal here and in aus..

If anyone is buying anything from abroad, one brand is really cheap which is Apple.. Does your budget allow you to buy an Apple 15.4” MacBook Pro ??

Thank you…

at Config wise dell is best you would get, and yes 9 Cell will provide a 25 to 30% extra battery life though it would make the product few gms heavy !!

Stick with 1420 its a fine option !!!

Choto Cheeta  on March 5th, 2008

Here is what would Microsoft say officially..

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/capable.mspx

Now I would say install it, only when you have 1 GB RAM and better grfx like in onboard then GMA 3000 (Intel 946) or higher, in Notebook GMA 950 would do fine… Or if you have Nvidia 6100 Grfx or such…

In that price range of yours INR Rs. 30,000/-, you wont be able to get a name Core 2 Duo…

I suggest, Lenovo 3000 N200 0769-A29 which is Rs. 29,500/- inclusive TAX, where as another extra 512 MB DDR-II 667 would be Rs. 550/- and 1 GB extra would be Rs. 1100/- !!!

Under this segment Lenovo seemed to be the best over all performer !!!

How ever you have option for Acer 4720z and Compaq v3702au !!!

I have recently bought a ECS 945PL-A Motherboard because it was very cheap. Today I realized that it only supports Pentium D and P4 models. I wanted to buy a Pentium Dual Core CPU. I also got myself a 8800 GT.

I would first like to know if a 945PL chip will support a Pentium Dual Core CPU. And even if it will, should I just throw this motherboard out and get a normal one to support C2D and a better RAM? Cause this one is only 533/400 MHz compatible. I planning to run the latest games and would like to know if this motherboard is good enough for a 8800 GT.

Thank you.

Pentium D is nothing but 2 Prescott Processors side by side… runs very hot, not a good OverClocker..
what is overclocker…???

what is prescott processor side by side??
it runs very hot?? what does that mean?

Choto Cheeta  on March 17th, 2008

Hello umesh,

You can opt for Lenovo 3000 N200 with extra 1 GB RAM and one external USD keyboard + Mouse for long typing !!!

Base model is Rs. 29,500/- incl all tax in Kolkata which comes with 512MB RAM, you can add any available Laptop DDR-II 667 MHz RAM from Transend or KingStone which would Rs. 1100/- incl TAX !!!

Microsoft USB combo for keyboard mouse would be Rs. 650/- + TAX..

I would also suggest to extend the warranty for 2 years which would cost Rs. 5400/- so you get a full cover of the system for 3 years :)

Hi Choto,

I am planning to buy a Compaq presario laptop for home use. Right now in hyderabad, there is a severe shortage of compaq laptop with core 2 duo processor for more than 2 months now.

laptop with dual core is easily available. i have freezed on model C772TU. My basic usage would be browsing, chatting and uploading/viewing photos. maybe few flash games. no NFS kind of games. Do you think dual core processor is sufficient for this kind of use, or should i wait for core 2 duo ? i am also planning to install windows XP. do you think it is an outdated OS with the coming of Windows Vista ?

Kindly reply at your earliest as I might buy the laptop within the next 2 days.

Thanks a ton in advance,
Ramya

Choto Cheeta  on March 27th, 2008

Hello Ramya.

I would warn you for compaq as if you plan to run Windows XP / 2000 / 2003 as compaq has the worst support (driver) for those OS..

For your uses, Intel Pentium Dual Core T2310 / T2330 type processors are more than enough.

Personally I would suggest Lenovo 3000 N200 0769-A29 which is Rs. 29,500/- including all TAX and duty. How ever one must add at-least another extra 512 MB or 1 GB RAM (Laptop DDR-II 667 MHz 1 GB is Rs. 1100/-) in the base config.

Take the lenovo if you can digest the looks  else check out Acer 4720z which is Rs. 31000/- including all TAX and duty !!

thank you..

Choto Cheeta  on March 27th, 2008

@Prashanth

If you cant find XFX 630i 7150, look again, and still if you cant find, then look once again.. :D as thats the best solution under your budget, however if you are really forced to buy some thing else, then look for BIOSTAR nforce 7050 or 7150 models !!!

If still no luck, then I would vote for Intel DG31PR !! WHich is also Rs. 2.9k !!

Kumar  on April 4th, 2008

I bought P4 HT 3.06GHz processor in Sep 2006. I had got the motherboard MSI Neo3PE from USA where i had gone to meet my uncle. I have been having problems with CPU reaching temp upto 60C, i did try to resolve it by adding fan, keeping the cabinet open, pointing the desert cooler/AC towards the open cabinet and have been able to process so far. This year in Feb the temp shot to 70C+. I did a proper check this time. The coolant which sits on the CPU was not properly installed and one of the knob seems to be broken. May be so it was unable to properly heat sink. Also the heating paste had dried up. I gave the system to a comp eng who said that it was happening cause of the paste and cause i was using only 256MB RAM. He advised me to upgrade the RAM to 1GB and get repasting done. He was asking Rs 450/- for the heat sink paste. I did not give in and went to Nehru Place in Delhi and got a heat sink paste for RS 15/-. I replaced the old paste with the new one. Now with open cabinet and outside temp at around 27c the CPU temp shows 55c and rises to 63C when runnnig 2-3 windows.

1GB ram of Kingston is costing RS 2400/- at Nehru Place. However the comp eng i gave the comp to is selling me a 1GB ram of Kingston for Rs 1450/-. It looks good and he showed me the dealers signature dated 23/3/2008 on the RAM( which is done for warranty purpose).

My Cabinet has the MSI Neo3PE mobo, P4 3.06GHz HT, 256MB Kingston RAM, Samsung CD RW, 80GB Samsung HDD, NVIDIA FX5500 AGP 256MR 128 Bit, Floopy Drive. I checked at a shop in Nehru Place who is ready to upgrade mu PC and will give Rs 4000/- for everthing except the cabinet, floopy and CD ROM. I will have to pay RS 5600/- extra to him to get Pentium Core 2 Duo 2.2 + Intel 945 Mobo + 1GB kingston RAM.

Do you thing i should go ahead with this option or just add a 1GB RAM to my current system and do something about the Air flow system in the cabinet and change the Heat sink coolent of the CPU.

I would like to play a few games like NFS / Max payne. I work on Adope Photoshop a lot. Apart from these the normal Word, excel and Internet Explorer are the things i use.

Also even after adding an AGP i have not been able to play Max payne on my system the games installs and leaves me with a black screen when i have tried to run it earlier.

What do i do and if you suggest me to upgrade then which CPU and mobo will be best.

Thankyou for your help. Sorry if this became too long. :-) )

Hi ChotoCheeta,

I want to buy a laptop for the following reasons (mainly)
- OS :- XP SP2 (must)
- .NET programming (with its higher versions)
- other ofc work
- bit of gaming (nfs, max payne , half life 2 kind of)

I have a confusion between Lenovo N200 – 0769-A74 and Compaq Presario C772TU. The Lenovo model comes with RAM = 512 MB (256MB in each slot). The shopkeeper says if I want to upgrade to 1GB RAm, then I’ll have to settle down with non-lenovo branded RAMs(Transcend etc). So please advice whether transcend n other brand RAMs will suit perfectly just like the lenovo original RAM…. One more thing.. the Compaq comes with 2GB so it is enticing me (alos its looks), so as a whole I am bit confused…pls advice ASAP….I am intending to buy it soon..

thanks,

Choto Cheeta  on April 5th, 2008

Compaq has really really low or rather no support for Windows XP in terms of driver :( now you have not mentioned your budget either therefore its not that easy to suggest a Notebook.

Do note, Lenovo will work with transend or kingstone ram :D

Lenovo 0769-A29 comes with Intel Dual Core T2310 processor at base price of Rs. 29.5k incl all, do give it a look :D

thank you :)

Choto Cheeta  on April 5th, 2008

@Kumar

Intel Pentium processor are know to run hot… 70C is not some thing should make you worried..

Therefore I dont see an immediate reason for you to upgrade just you are running 70C temps on processor :(

i want to know the exact difference between Pentium D and core 2 duo. if both are dual core processors which one has a faster clock rate. i worry not about the temperature at which the processor runs. i need the max speed dual core processor. also is 945 chipset compatible with the above processors?

kumar  on April 6th, 2008

@ 70C of pentium HT 3.06GHz..
Thanx for your answer, however the problem is that when it goes over 60C it slow down a lot. It does not respond to commands before 1 min..Still you think i should not upgrade. or should i just get more RAM..since i have only 256MB RAM

Thanks,

kumar  on April 6th, 2008

Hey Cheeta, kindly xplain the advantages of higher FSB and Cache..Does higher FSB & Cache perform better or higher Clock speed? and in what aspect…

Roy  on April 7th, 2008

Yup kumar, if u raise FSB (cpu bus clock) then u can get more speed on proccessor or u can simply raise cpu clock ratio multiplier… but remember it will cost u more heat and more vcore, so pay attention on cpu voltage (dont over 1,5volt)… also remember when u overclock cpu dont forget to setup PCIE freq & PCI clock into 100 & 33, if not then ur PCIE & PCI will raise higher and damage ur graphic card add on… (correctme if i’m wrong coz i’m still new about overclocking hehe)

Hi,

This is really nice blog. I am planning to buy Dell Inspiron 1525 (Intel Core 2 Duo T5550, 2 GB RAM). But I have read that it only comes with a Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100. There is no option to change the graphics cards. I want to know whether it would be problem running Windows Vista or games with descent graphics requirements.

Thanks,

Hi Choto,

I am having a hard time with my computers (a PIV 1.7 GHz with Mercury 845 GLAD board and a PIV 2.4 GHZ with Intel 845 GVSR board). Forget it! I am not gonna ask you anything in regard to them :D

I am planning to upgrade to a new CPU and use the monitor and other accessories that I already have. My queries are:
1. I am going for an Intel core 2 duo 2.2 GHz processor. The dealer has suggested Intel 945 GCNL motherboard. Is there any other motherboard that gives a better performance and is compatible with the above processor. Rate is not a constraint, though my budget is of course not high end. BTW, I don’t use an air conditioner where I work. I don’t think I am into a lot of extreme computing. I work in the field of medical transcription where I keep up to 7-10 applications running and yes, internet while I work. I sometimes watch movies online, listen to music. Games, NO. Anyway, I don’t want to go for a low-end configuration too. So, for one, need your suggestion on the motherboard thing. It should be an Intel board. And also, does INtel 945 GCNL have a builtin graphics card? I don’t need to buy any additional cards, do I?
2. I am planning to buy one of the Iball cabinets (preferrably Ibenz that looks cool and I heard they are sturdy) that has a 400 watts 24 PIN SMPS. My second query is whether that would work on the 500 VA UPS that I have. I am a dork when it comes to electrical things :”>
3. The present configuration I am going to get assembled is:

Intel Core 2 Duo Based Spares :
Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.2 GHz – Intel E4500
Intel 945 GCNL Mother Board
2 GB DDR2 Memory- 667 MHz
160 GB Hard Disk Drive SATA (Seagate)
DVD Writer – Sony (preferrably) or Moserbaer
ATX Cabinet – IBall (Ibenz).

I plan to use Windows XP with SP2, as I am quite used to it.

Kindly let me know if I need to change anything in the configuration I am going to assemble. Write me back as soon as you can, man. I am going to have this thing assembled in the next two days or two. God bless you!

Thanks

Choto Cheeta  on April 14th, 2008

Hello Dikshit,

Between Dell 1525 and HP Pavilion dv6830us I would vote for HP :D

Hello Mr. Sreenath,

I have looked in to your Specifications, now please note the applications you would run, may not require the power of a Core 2 Duo processor.

I would say, Intel Dual Core E2140 may be more than enough for your setup.

Personally I prefer XFX 630i 7150 over any Intel 945 based board when you plan to stay on board video. The XFX 630i 7150 is some time hard to come by at some remote place of India, therefore if that’s the case with you or if its prices higher than mentioned, I suggest you to look for Intel DG31PR which is Intel G31 chipset based board.

My Best bet would be,

Intel Dual Core E2140 (1.6 GHz) @ Rs. 2350/- + VAT
XFX 630i 7150 @ Rs. 3450/- + VAT or Intel DG31PR @ Rs. 2900/- + VAT

Also, one more thing is why not AMD ?? with similar price you may find a better AMD configuration :)

AMD Athlon X2 4200+ @ Rs. 2550/- + VAT
ASUS M2N-MS SE @ Rs. 2350/- + VAT

:D

I personally would vote for AMD setup on this price range for you need :) the fact is AMDs days runs cooler than Intel Core 2 :)

Hi Choto,

Thank you so much for your help on this. Well, I hate to say this, but I fixed the SMPS on my old PIV, and it works as good as it used to. So I decided to give it a wait and see if it lasts for another six months to a year……..

Requirement : Laptop for B-skool (XLRI).
Budget : 25K to max 35K
OS: DOS/Linux as I want to avoid Vista and use XP only.
RAM: 1GB (if 512MB , then wud upgrade to 1GB)
Screen: Preferrably 15.4″
Processor : Dual Core, Not Celeron (although i Dunno why ppl prefer Intel over Celeron), and in this budget i guess Core2Duo wont fit.

The major requirement is ruggedness, decent battery and weight and least problematic in this segment.

Please advice !!

Thank u

Choto Cheeta  on April 22nd, 2008

Hello Saurabh,

I am extremely sorry for this late reply…

Rs. 5000/- would mean that ABiT IP35-E for your motherboard need as in gaming, but when you are buying for DATA base server need also, you need to have a board which supports server based OSes both in Linux and in Windows Server 2003 / 2008 platform…

I wont support running gaming and server in same system as games have limited support for windows server based oses and no support for Linux servers !!!

Better would be buying ASUS P5K-VM as your motherboard which would be in price range of Rs. 7500/- comes with onboard x3100 and spend the rest amount on a Play Station 2 in Kolkata open market the device is around Rs. 6500/- (without bill / papers)

Thank you

————————————————–

Hello Nilofer,

Sir you forgot to ask the question I suppose… Please do let me know whats your question !!!

Thank you,

————————————-

Hello Biplab,

Dell 1525 would be a very nice option also do give Lenovo 3000 N200 0769-AB2 with Core 2 Duo :D a thought.

I would suggest you to stay away from Compaq as it has really low or no support for Windows XP (no drivers)… if yo plan to run Windows XP…

————————

Hello JM,

For your usage I don’t think spending Rs. 45k would be a good idea..

I have reviewed and tested quite a few notebooks and Intel Dual Core (T2310 / T2370) processors are more than fine to drive Windows Vista with full acceleration and carry out the works you have written with ease…

I would say Acer 4720z at Rs. 30k would be a really nice option and if possible think to spend another 9k on a 19″ widescreen TFT :D like View Sonic va1912wb which would be Rs. 8k + VAT or better option like Dell 198wef which is Rs. 9200/- + VAT !!!

In this way you may carry the notebook also enjoy the home entertainment at home by connecting it to your large TFT :D

Thank you…

Hello Rajesh,

For your budget take a look at Lenovo 3000 N200 0769-A9 with Intel Pentium Dual Core and base 512 MB RAM, add another 1 GB at Rs. 1100/- to make that total of 1.5GB…

base price is Rs. 29500/- where 1 GB stick is Rs. 1100/- :D

This would do the job, as for your need I dont thing Core 2 Duo processor would be needed !!

Hello Trudy,

Thank you for the comment…

Avoid HCL, they, SAHARA of such would be the last company to buy from !! :D

For your budget, look at Dell 1525 models and as well as Lenovo 3000 N200 0769-AB2 core 2 duo model, there is also Acer 5920 at Rs. 38k..

All these 3 are very good in doing their job… I prefer Dell or Lenovo over Acer :) but Acer has the best screen performance between these 3 where as Lenovo has the best built quality and Dell is the most pretty one :D

so look and then make your choice :D

Thank you…

ravi shankar  on April 29th, 2008

Hello…

My primary usage is some development work in .net and also some design works along with movies and music……

Choto Cheeta  on April 29th, 2008

Hey Ravi,

If you are not in to heavy gaming then Dell 1525 or Lenovo 3000 N200 0769-AB2 (Core 2 Duo) or Acer 5920 would be better option and cheaper than HP model !!!

I personally prefer Dell or Lenovo :p

For your need RAM and processor would matter more than larger internal HDD or better video card so wont be a good idea to invest in 250 GB and 8400 GS

thank you.

Rajesh  on April 29th, 2008

Thanks, I also like the lenovo and going for the same Lenovo 3000N A29.

Baishali  on April 29th, 2008

I need a laptop for playing dvds, email chat(video audio), small gaming like nfs, aoe3, etc…do u think I need a core2duo or a celeron 2ghz processor is fine..? I need lappy for about 2-3 yrs only…….

Choto Cheeta  on April 29th, 2008

Hello Baishali,

I would 1st keep the preference of 3 years usage in front..

Now do you need Core 2 Duo processors ?? Not really, for your need Core 2 duo is not needed but yes, the core architecture is needed..

Avoid Celeron 330 / 440 type processors.. Where as Celeron 550 is a processor which is built upon the core architecture which can be found in notebooks like Acer Aspire 5315 DVD Cam

Whats your budget ?? If you have higher budget then certainly you may opt for Core 2 Duo based models (please refer in above comments for reference) where as on lower budget this acer 5315 would do the job for you and to run it for 3 years simply buy the extra warranty pack which is Rs. 5500/- to extend the default 1 year warranty to 3 years complete cover :D

thank you,

Baishali  on April 30th, 2008

Thanks on ur comments…the model you specified seems to be nice…..I searched a bit and came to know from a person who bought in Mumbai that the cam is 640×480 but still gives good video chat with rconnect…. he said he bought it at 22000….can you give me the price in kol (with taxes and lappy bag)? and where I can buy it (shop address)?

can I install rhel3 or rhel4 or rhel5 or centos4 or centos5 or solaris10 x86.

Hi Choto dada…. :)
So I have finalized to go 4 a sub 30K lappy.
The finalists are:
i) Lenovo 3000 N200 0769-A29
Plz tell me if A29 and A74 are same configs…In Delhi market A74 is there…Is it ok to go 4 A74 instead of A29?

ii)Compaq C772TU (KU764PA)
How much does this costs in Kolkatta?
I’ll install winXP on this. Is it better than Lenovo…

Also plz suggest any Lappy in 25K range….Thanks a lot !!

hi ChotoCheetah,

One problem I am facing. I bought a laptop few weeks back.. (Lenovo A74) with XP SP2. It was taking hardly 15 to 20 sec to start XP SP2. But since few days, I am finding that the start up time has increased. Now it takes 2 min to load windows completely… I had run the reg cleaner as well. Also uninstalled the anti virus (mcafee)..but same result… (ie slow start up).. please suggest or advise wat to do or wat is the cause of this? kindly reply…..
thanks..

Choto Cheeta  on May 1st, 2008

Hello Baishali,

The price is same here in Kolkata aslo around Rs. 22k incl the bag and sme optional gifts !!

Try in G C Avenue which is know as Chandi market in Kolkata, road around in many shops and see if you can find a good deal, Technocrat, Vedant, Computer word, Saaboo, Balaji, Supreme r some big names. try in all of them and dont forget to bargain !!

thank you

——————–

Hello Sugata.

The KF095PA is certain very good product, and it comes with Intel 965GM, linux is fully supported with it where as I am sorry I have never tested Solaris with 965GM with it before, so cant confirm !!!

One thing you must note, as the HP mdel you have chosen would require you to stay under A/C room all the time in India atleast as the operating Temp is listed 0 to 35c where as in Indian weather 42c is quite common now days !!!

thank you,

————————————

Hello Nilofer,

I personally would suggest bellow 3 brand and their models, Lenevo 3000 N200 0769-AB2 (default 1GB), Dell 1520 / 1525, Acer 5920.

You may choose any of them, which ever you like :D , all there as quite same in config and under same budget range !!

Thank you,

———————————-

Hello Vikas,

The A74 has a better processor than A29 so you may certainly opt for it, where as I dont vote for compaq because they have worst Windows XP support among all.. If you buy compaq, either you have search in 3rd party web site and places for your drivers (which violates the warranty terms) or run only Windows Vista !!

thank you,

———————-

Hello Shouvik,

Windows XP SP3 is out, if possible obtain and install that, see if any help for that !! Personally I dont quite trust Macafee, if possible obtain, install and make a full system scan with Kaspersky though :)

Please note, Intel Core 2 DUo is a better processor thn Intel Dual Core.

So if possible to afford then do opt for Intel Core 2 Duo processor !!!

Hi,
I am planning to upgrade my PC from a P4 HT. I do not play games (no time). Use PC for word, excel, powerpoint, CD/DVD writing, and extensive Adobe and phographic software, downloading. While downloading the PC will be kept on for a little more than 12 hours. OS will be XP SP2

Firstly i want to finalise on the CPU.
I have decided to had 2 * 1GB RAM at Dual Channel. Since i want to keep the comp on for around 12 hours and will use Adobe, will a E2160 be sufficient or do i need a E4400. The only difference i see is in the cache and since i would be using 2GB DDR2 wont that be enough?

Secondly do i need to have a PCI-E card for better life and usage of the mobo or the onboard will be good enough?

Kindly answer these 2 questions and then i will ask you about which motherboard will be better in the Asus list? -))

Thank you very much in advance

I am looking to buy a Laptop which will not be for a very high end number crunching applications. It would be for trading, using MS office, accounting, Games, movies, music etc.
HP’s Compaq Presario C769US which has 1.73GHz, Dual Core, 2GB RAM, 250GB Hard drive seems a good one. But I would still like to confirm on your views before going ahead. If you know any other brands and makes please suggest them.

Choto Cheeta  on May 13th, 2008

Hello kumar,

For your need even E2140 would be enough, so yes stick with E2160 :) .. Dual channel with 2 GB should be fine enough to run Windows Vista and all your apps with ease where as you really dont need any PCI-E card if you are on in gaming, Intel G31 / G33 / G956 all are fully capable to run vista with all its glory wth ease :D

Now once more this is why not considering AMD, as in same budget AMD X2 is far better processor than Intel Dual Core line up !!!

thank you

—————————————————————

Hello Ramesh

I would give a Big negative over both model, as they are really costy !!!

Compare them with with Acer 4720z which is Rs. 30k all and Lenovo 3000 N200 0769-A29 which is Rs. 29.5k for base and consider 1 GB DDR-II 667MHz is Rs. 1100/- all…

Where as compare the Core 2 model with with either Acer 5920 or with Lenovo 3000 N200 0769-AB2 when both are round about 35k !!!!

Why would you need to spend 10k higher for just 100 GB extra HDD ??

thank you.

Can you please specify your budget ? and which OS do you plan to run ?? Compaq is known to have worst support for Windows XP !!!

i am looking within the price range of 35k.. if yuu can suggest some other models withing the same range that would serve my purpose of .net would be of great help..

Choto Cheeta  on May 16th, 2008

Compaq is a good brand to go if you plan to stay on Vista, as Compaq has issues with Windows XP.

The support for drivers are really low in case of Compaq as if you plan Windows XP / Server 2003

However as in your case, as you would be running windows vista, therefore you may go for it.

I would certainly vote for the Core 2 Duo model, which is Rs. 34.5k incl all in Kolkata, Compaq Presario C773TU

Thank you.

Choto Cheeta  on May 18th, 2008

Hello Mr. Manish

when you are making a system under a tight budget, most of the time you amy find an AMD based one is performing far better than an Intel one.

Reason ?

see u dont actually buy a processor, you buy a full system, so although u spend money on a costly processor which is certainly better than X2 but in actual system that Core 2 Duo becomes an under performer due to the lack of supporting hardware.

Most of the time, the supporting hardware which actually can bring the most out of an Intel Core 2 range processor are it self costlier than their AMD counter part.

Therefore wise would be an AMD system

For 35k with your needs, I would suggest these bellow system parts :D

AMD X2 5600+ @ Rs. 5500 /- + TAX
MSI K9AGMv2 (AMD 780 / ATi HD 3200) @ Rs. 4600 /- + TAX
2 GB KingStone 800 MHz Single Stick x 2 (4 GB) @ Rs. 3600 /- + TAX
250 GB SATA-II 16MB WD @ Rs. 2700 /- + TAX
DVD RW IDE ASUS / LG / Sony / Any @ Rs. 1100 /- + TAX
Any local Cabinet @ Rs. 650 /- + TAX
500 Watts Zebronics @ Rs. 1600 /- + TAX
Dell 19″ TFT @ Rs. 9200 /- + TAX
UPS any local brand @ Rs. 1600 /- + TAX
Keyboard Mouse (Microsoft / Logitech combo) @ Rs. 650 /- + TAX

TAX @ 4% VAT Rs. 1248 /-
Total 32448 /-

Spend the rest on a decent speaker system as u like :D

The AMD X2 5600 is certainly a processor which is comparable with Intel C2D E6550 or even E6750 (with little OC off course) :D where as this AMD allows you to use the best onboard graphics chipset based motherboard MSI K9AGMv2 or MSI K9AGM2-FD which comes with AMD SB780 chipset and ATi HD 3200 video chipset :D

As u may see, the price is compare to Intel Core 2 + Mobo + Grfx Card is far lower and allowing you to go for full 4 GB RAM support :D

I didnt include the speaker details, as this is some thing which depends on ur ears, so its better to trust ur own feeling :D ad choose one :D

Thank you :D

Choto Cheeta  on May 19th, 2008

Hello Mr. Goswami

If you are in need to travel a lot with the notebook I would suggest to look for a 13.1″ model because of their light weight :D

So what exactly you plan to do with the notebook ?? What the apps would you be running ?

Saurav Goswami  on May 19th, 2008

Hi Choto Cheeta,

I would not be travelling much with it, mainly campus use being a student.I would be running engineering applications like autocad and others.Other standard MS applications would also be used.

Choto Cheeta  on May 19th, 2008

Hello Mr. Goswami

Best option would be Dell 1525, see as for your need, because of no or really low gaming and heavy CAD application, you should concentrate on better processor power along with more RAM.

Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop

The base price is Rs. 42k + TAX

upgrade the base model with 45nm Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T8100 / 2×2 (4GB) System RAM / True Life 15.4″ Display / Intel Wireless – N Card

This would make the system price with all TAX and VAT at Rs. 51450/-

However after you place the order in Web site when the sales team calls you, you may bargain a little and it is possible to get the price down by 2k :D on this Notebook :)

Alternatively visit shops like VEDANT / Supreme / Technocraft in G. C. Avnue for direct purchase !!!!

Thank you.

RAM : 2 GB

Graphics : NVidia Quadro fx 370 / fx 570

Monitor : Lenovo 19″ widescreen LCD

And cabinet, Hard-disk etc. as per my choice.

Kumar Gaurav  on June 8th, 2008

@Manish Sardana

Use C2D E8200 – for Rs 8000 (it has 6MB cache )

Use Asus/Gigabyte Mobo with either G33 or the new P35. P945 /965 are old chipsets. Cannot overlock on Intel mobos as good as on Asus / Gigabyte

You can take Asus P5K series.

Get a mobo with 4 RAM slots. Initially buy 2 1GB RAM. If need be you can add 1 or 2 more in future.

Since you anyhow want to get a PCI-E get a mobo which does not have integrated graphic.

TFT – Samsung / Viewsonic are great. Viewsonic is great value for money. Samsung is little expensive cause of its brand value in india.

Speakers of Altec Lancing are better than Creative. They dont distort at high volume.

Get a cabinet which has provision for 12mm cabinet fan. i got one from Icool with a 12 mm fan already fitted for 1250 from Nehru Palce.

Laptop or Desktop woudl depend on your usability and requirement.

Chota cheeta will be able to guide you much much better.

kumar

So basically, the Dual Core and the Core 2 Duo are pretty much the same, just that the Dual Core is cheaper? you did mention that they function the same… just wanted to get it clear.

Dorval C  on June 23rd, 2008

thats mostly true but i can tell you from experience that c2d is much faster than the dual core. dual core might be cheaper, but thats not for no reason… its simply not as good as the c2d prcessor

Hi,
Im thinking of buying a laptop and I have 3 choices
HP 530 Core Duo T2600 2.16GHz, 2MB L2
HP 530 Core 2 Duo T5200 1.73GHz 2MB L2
HP 6720s Dual-Core 1.73GHz, 2MB L2

I have read some articles about T2600 and T5200 and I dont know which one is better? Some say that T2600 is better.
I’ll use laptop for programming so the performance of the processor is very important.

Choto Cheeta  on June 30th, 2008

Hello Sir,

Try and avoid Core Duo processors. Basic difference between a Core Duo and Core 2 Duo is, the support for next gen x64 architecture.

Intel Core Duo doesnt support EM64T hence no 64bit platform support for these processors.

Therefore I would vote for Core 2 processor although the model you have said comes with lower frequency :)

with all due respect you dont need to spend 10k on a computer you are only using for programming. you could buy a 1000 dollar computer and it would be just fine.

p.s. use c2d

Choto Cheeta  on July 6th, 2008

Hello,

USD 1 is (Rs. 40 INR)

So here prices what we are talking about is in Rs. (INR) value,

Therefore you are totally right, at USD 1000 = Rs. 40k is certainly a great budget !!!

For info…. i have Coreduo E4600 2,4GHz, 2×1024 DDR2 800 ADATA, HIS HD4850, and i guess it’s still not enough for medium gamer’s scale, i guess i need to overclock my cpu to 3GHz or buy more powerful like E6550/E8200
(their price are almost the same)…unfortunately mymobo doesnt has utility for o.c cpu (ECS G31)

Choto Cheeta  on July 14th, 2008

Hello Roy,

Intel E4600 is not a Core Duo, please note, Core Duo and Core 2 Duo are totally different products.

In short layman’s word, Intel Core Duo is not present for Desktop, there are few Notebook “socket P” processor model from Core Duo available in the market.

The basic and a quick difference would be missing Intel EM64T support in Core Duo compare to Intel Core 2 Duo platform :)

@Caesar Gunasingh

Please give this a read, http://www.chotocheeta.com/2008/07/24/which-laptop-notebook-to-buy-a-notebook-laptop-buying-guide-august-2008/

@Tanush

Core 2 Duo / Multi processor…

There are few ways by which you can have lulti processor, thats many processors in single socket, a monther board with Dual processor socket or a cluster server !!

@sharfan

I am sorry, I dont not understand any of your question, can you please explain me in detailed as what exactly is wrong ??

I mean Windows XP is not meant to work as you wanted it to be, because when you unplug a running OS from Hardware Config – A and plug it in to Hardware config – B, if A and B is totally diferent than from each other (eg. A is Intel B is AMD) and try to boot from the OS in new hardware, Windows XP would fail to boot as for missing drivers and all that, also the os would need to be reactivated !!!

Now about your second question, you may visit the manufactures web site support section to download the drivers and softwares for that Model which you have. If you feel lost please post the exact make and model number of the motheboard, I would try to locate the links for you.

@Maha

Please give it a read, http://www.chotocheeta.com/2008/06/18/difference-between-45nm-core-2-duo-quad-and-65nm-core-2-duo-quad/

and about your purchase, see config would depend on the need of yours. so please post the purpose of the pc as well the budget of yours.

@Manish Sardana

ASUS P5K looks fine, couple that with Intel Q9450 which retails at Rs. 12500/- + VAT or if the system is only for gaming then, E8500 at same price range..

thanks

Manish Sardana  on July 28th, 2008

As you suggested for budget of Rs.20,000 (Processor & motherboard)-
Intel Q9450, Asus P5k & 4 GB of RAM, Is that still graphics card is reqd. Which is better & how much memory.
System is required for running 3D softwares like Catias.

Is that Intel Q9450 is core2duo processor

Choto Cheeta  on July 28th, 2008

Hello Manish,

You have requested for Only processor and motherboard, hence I have written Q9450 (it is a 45nm Core 2 Quad) along with ASUS P5K…

You cant accomodate any thing else under Rs. 20,000/- if you buy those 2.

So are you in need to build a comlete CPU under Rs. 20,000 ?? or you just need a processor and a motherboard at Rs. 20k ??

Also for processor model and numbers, please read bellow,

Choto Cheeta  on July 28th, 2008

Hello,

For basic Works like Internet browsing / Office Application, movies and bit of entertainment, The Intel Dual Core would be good enough, how ever, I would pesonally suggest to decrease the RAM to 2 GB and HDD to 160GB where as invest the saved amount to go for a processor upgrade to make it a Core 2 Duo…

Why ??

See HDD / RAM can be upgraded any time, you may by extra RAM and install it your self, where as you can always enjoy external large USB hard drives any time, but even if your need is really high, you cant upgrade the processor of a notebook !!!

So invest in the core config which is not upgradable after leaving the factory !!!

Hello Choto boss…

I have a old Compaq Presario PC with AMD Athlon processor, 40 GB hard disk, 256 RAM. I have been planning to start online work from home, which needs internet. So, when I got the internet connection, my PC slowed down considerably (toooo slow). I have to wait for few seconds to even type the next letter and wait for few minutes just to open an window or an application. Hence, I was thinking of buying a new PC. Since this will be my 1-time investment, I would like you to suggest me a higher-end configuration, for which I will not need to add any software, extra cards, or upgrade it at least for another 2 years.

I inquired for a new PC and am planning to purchase a PC with Intel Core 2 Duo processor (2.53 GHz), Intel 945 Chipset or a Intel company motherboard, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, and 320 GB hard disk. Please suggest if this configuration is good? Will this configuration need any extra graphics card? If yes, then which graphics card will be good enough?

And the MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION: What is overclocking and how is it done? If u can explain this in a stepwise manner, I would be greatful to you.

On a secondary thought….. when are the Intel Quad Core processors going to be available in India??? any idea?

Thank you very much.

Could you pls clarify on the below 3 doubts -
1) Would you recommend me to go for Core2Duo or DualCore?
2) NVIDIA or Intel make motherboard? (does NVIDIA supports Core2Duo?)
3) 17″ or 19″ wide TFT monitor(mostly I would settle for Samsung)

Difference – Core 2 Duo and Dual Core
(Pentium D – out of my scope of discussion)

Hi folks,

Lets try to make it simple-

Dual core and Core2 Duo both use 2 cores to process instructions….. good…. ok… but what’s the difference then…

Well… the main difference is in the cache memory they use…..
The Dual Core processors use single cache shared between the 2 cores… plus, the size of this cache memory is usually less as compared to Core2 Duo ones (typically in size of 128 KB to around 512 Kb or 1 MB)……

On the other side Core 2 Duo processors also use 2 cores but they have dedicated cache memory assigned to each of the core. so in effect there are two cache memories (note – in case if you don’t know what exactly cache memory is – its a static memory – Static RAM – which is costly – and charged per KB size – because they are embedded into your processors…. and your processor stores instruction set into these cores and also info of frequently accessed memory locations so that it doesn’t need to go to your main memory – RAM – on motherboard – every time and search indexes to get these locations. The result is – your access time is greatly reduced.. ok.. enough of info… lets get back to main topic)… so, the more cache your processor has got, the more costly will it be and more info can it store and faster will it become…. coming back to Core 2 Duo processors…. the cache size is typically 1 MB to up to 4 / 6 / 8 /12 Mb of size. so if a core 2 duo processor config states 4 Mb of cache, then effectively your 2 cores will use 2 Mb each… now you can make out the difference in speed between a dual core using 512 cache and a Core 2 Duo using 4 Mb of cache… and the same reason why core 2 duo processors are costly and more faster (about 40 %) than the dual core ones…

Finally… to summarize, dual core procs (less cache size and that too shared cache between two cores) are strip in version of Core 2 Duo procs (more cache size and independant cache between each of the two cores), which make Core 2 Duo procs costlier and faster than Dual Core procs… so the winner is Core 2 Duo (and its comes with a price…)

hope everyone is clear now….
lets keep it simple…………

cheers,
Samkad

Samkad  on October 5th, 2008

Anju –
Go for Core 2 Duo…
see my comment above for difference between core2-duo and dual core…

Avinash Jain –
You too can choose Core2 Duo…. btw u said u r a soft engg…what are u going to use the PC for?

and to all those who are going to buy a Laptop… always for go higher configuration when buying laptops…because laptops cannot be upgraded (except RAM). think abt the next 2 /3 years where u want u r lappy to support the software avl in market.
By higher config…I mean that the CPU speed should be good (at least 2 GHz), sufficient RAM (min 2 GB, recommended – 3 GB). and if can afford, try to get graphics card of 256 mb…now the catch here is, the more you choose to go for higher config, the more u need to pay for that….but if you stress only for laptop, then I think u shld be wise to shell out few thousands more and get home a decent one….otherwise, u can get all the things and more at the same price if u choose to buy a desktop…
hope this helps you to make out a decision….
cheers,
Samkad.

Hi samkad,
I wanna buy Core 2 Duo 2.53 Ghz processor.
Which Motherboard would be better?
Any suggestion by anyone

Samkad  on October 6th, 2008

Ruchika Sethi –
My first question for you is what’s your budget? and do you plan to buy desktop or a laptop?
and what is your primary use?
you must have seen some configs by now….did you like any one of them?

smeet –
what is the config u r lookin for? RAM, HDD, graphics card?…..
if you are tight on budget but looking for a decent MB – I would recommend Intel DG33FB (cost around 5K). check on intel site for more details….
- If price is not a consideration, then I would recommend ASUS P5Q deluxe (cost around 12 K) or Gigabyte – GA-EP35-DS3P (cost – not sure)
well.. all this is for a desktop.. i assume u plan to buy desktop…u didn’t mentioned anything…and u r MB choice also depends on your RAM capacity and graphics card support.
btw.. u just mentioned the CPU…

For all those who want to buy desktop / laptop – there are 4 main imp parameters that decide you systems performance and price – CPU, Motherboard, RAM and Hard Disk.
Ideally, the ratio of cost should be –
CPU (40 % of estimated cost)
MB (30 % of estimated cost)
RAM – (20 % of estimated cost)
HDD – (10 % of estimated cost)

I call it the 10-20-30-40 rule…
Note – the other things like keyB, mouse, monitor, UPS, speakers are like accessories. if you r tight on budget, do not spend more on them… u can always buy them after few months of savings…but u cannot even think of above 4 main items to replace or upgrade again, bcz that’s gonna cost u a big deal…i have also considered HDD as a primary item bcz if you settle for a less capacity while buying, chances are that u will likely end up buying a more capacity HDD within 6 mnths (we all r hungry for more space)… so you r effectively spending double the cost on HDD.. in my view, go for a bigger capacity while buying itself.

I will stop for now…

cheers,
Samkad.

hello,

i’ve jumped into your thread when looking for comparison. i want to buy new laptop and considering between 2 options with $ 100 price difference. the one with dual core costs me $799 and core 2 duo costs $ 899. i will use the laptop for some graphic application like AutoCAD and revit. is it worth to spend another $100 to buy core 2 duo or better upgrade the memory?

thanks
grace

hello Chotocheete
i’m going to buy an old laptop. its model is Dell Inspiron E1505 ( CPU core duo 1.73 G, Ram 512 single chanel, 60Gb HDD). the seller will sell it around $450. do you think it’s worth to buy this one?
thanks in advancce.
novati

Samkad  on October 8th, 2008

Grace -
I think you shld choose core 2 duo if Autocad is in picture. If u can stretch u r budget, consider Core 2 Quad which can give u good performance on graphics apps. Or u can choose core 2 duo with min 2 GB RAM and a graphics card (min 512 MB for apps like autocad). Now the thing that matters here is that since u r going for a lappy, these things are going to add u r budget considerably.
And my personal opinion is that graphics app on dual-core CPU may not be a good buy. Go to Core 2 Duo.

Novati -
well, are u really sure its a core 2 duo ???
Check again if its a Dual core CPU…
second thing, inquire whether u can upgrade its ram to 1 or 2 gb (the lappy motherboard shld support that) and how much will that cost.
if both your answers are yes and the ram upgrade costs less (I don’t know ram prices in dollars.. but they must be cheap to compared in India), then I think u can go for the deal…
one imp thing… second sale laptops contain problems like – less battery operating time (usually only around an hour or so) and screen brightness fades with passing years…so be sure to check these things and ask the owner how old is the laptop…

hope this helps u to make a decision…

cheers,
Samkad.

Hi Choto Cheeta

I am planning to buy a laptop. I have figured out HP DV-51102TU model. It is good in terms of RAM(3GB), HDD(250GB) and speed (2GHZ)….however only hitch is that it is dual core and not core 2 duo..the laptop is basically for home use and ocassionally to be used to remote desktop for official purpose…the cost of laptop is 42K..which happens to be my budget…
what do u feel? will the C2D or dual core make too much of a diff?(cost wise it is diff or 8K)

HI Frend!

How are you all?.I found this website really helpful.

Myself a student doing B.E(computers).One of my frendz need a new Desktop PC,his basic priorities is that he want to use the system mainly for softwares like PRO-ENGINEER,CATIA,And other cad softwares. Can u please suggest me the best and the latest assembled configuration?(price range-under 20K)

I also have some queries:

1.I know intel core 2 duo is better nowadays, but does it mean the higher the clock speed, the better is the processor?I mean the latest processor in the market is 3.16 ghz ,so did i go for that or the lower versions of it will also do?

2.I have chosen some of the motherboards which are compatible with the intel core 2 duo processor. Please help me out which one is better and why?and if u can suggest your opinion u can please tell me but one thing keep in mind they must not b too costly. They must be cost efficient and performance must not affect the cost. The chosen motherboards from my side are:

D945GCNL,DG31PR,DG33FB,DG965WH

I will be thankul if you can help me out.

byeee,waiting for your reply.

Hi All,
I had gone off to a Diwali vacation and m back now… a belated Happy Diwali to you all…
Someone asked a question – whether Choto Cheeta and Samkad are same ?
Well, they are not…but I don’t have any problem if you ppl want to link them (unless the blog owner has an issue :) I came across this site while searching a good config PC for myself and saw that there were so many ppl here with different queries just like me who wanted a better deal for their money… After spending a month or so on Internet reading variety of tech stuff and visiting many computer shops, I got to know about so many things…. I realize that I should share them with you all and would be happy if it would help you to take a decision on buying a good computer.
I don’t know the original creator of this blog, but would like to thank him for starting it. This is a really good place to get you started on your PC hunt.
The reason why I write on this blog is because if you search in Google for core 2 Duo / Dual proc / laptop / desktop – this is the first search entry that is shown – meaning – it is the widely accessed blog on internet. So naturally most of ppl will come to see this site first in order to find help. I try to answer whatever queries I can…

This time, Since there are so many queries in queue, I will try to answer what-ever I can ….
Cheers,
Samkad

Samkad  on November 3rd, 2008

Madina Salim – You said your requirement is for softwares like PRO-ENGINEER,CATIA,And other cad softwares; and your price range -under 20K. Well, I would say don’t buy a PC then, because u won’t be getting anything in that cost – atleast for graphics requirements.
Answer to your queries –
1. Latest processor in the market is 3.33 GHz and not 3.16 Ghz; but if your budget is so less then u can’t even think as its around 10.5 K (I don’t know the latest price .. this one is few months old).
2. Motherboard info –
a. D945GCNL – Intel Essential Series MB. Support for only upto 2 GB RAM. Will support Core 2 Duo CPU upto 1066 FSB (upto 2.80 GHz and lower only) – Suggestion – Not suitable.
b. DG31PR – Intel Classic Series MB. Will support higher Core 2 Duo’s of 1333 FSB (upto 3.33 GHz – I guess) and core 2 quad as well but only the 95 w procs, also supports only upto 4 GB RAM – Price – around 3K (+- 500 Rs/) – Suggestion – Not suitable, if you are going to upgrade in future.

c. DG33FB – Intel Classic Series MB. Will support higher Core 2 Duo’s of 1333 FSB (upto 3.33 GHz – confident), supports upto 8 GB RAM – suitable for future upgrade needs– supports core 2 quad procs as well, Price – around 5K (+- 500 Rs/) – Suggestion –Suitable – you can go for this one considering your budget restrictions.
d. DG965WH – Intel Media Series MB. Will support Core 2 Duo’s and core 2 quad procs of upto 1066 FSB only (ex – Core 2 quad upto 2.66 GHz and core 2 duo – 2.80 GHz max), supports upto 8 GB RAM – suitable for future upgrade needs, Price – no idea – Suggestion – not Suitable considering your graphics needs and future upgrade requirements for higher CPU.

Verdict – I suggest go for Intel DG33FB.

In my view, what u need is – Core 2 Duo 3 GHz (E8400 – 6 MB L2 Cache, 1333 FSB), MB – DG33FB, Graphics Card 512 MB, RAM – 4 GB (800 MHz), LCD monitor – 19” Wide screen
Estimated budget goes to – 23 K (without LCD). Or 32 K (with LCD).
Hope this helps you to take a decision.

Samkad  on November 3rd, 2008

Thomas –
If that is a new laptop with Vista preinstalled, you should be aware that playing with system software will make your warranty void. Vista is much better than XP. If you are worried because of the speed then you can disable all the visual effects of vista to improve your system performance. Btw, what do you mean by “all the driver installed under windows vista”. Does your laptop has Vista or XP?

Imran –
As per your comment your config is –
Core 2 Duo 2.5 Ghz
RAM – 4 GB
Graphics Card – 512mb 8600 GFx
HDD – 320 GB.
And you are saying that you still want to upgrade it 2 higher speeds ???? I think you already have a good config. Btw, what r u using this system for ? ???????

Ajay –
u plan to buy HP Pavilion DV5-1104TU Laptop for 50k. But you didn’t specify what config it has. I will need the config to compare it with other Laptop models and give you a better option if there is any.

Smeet –
You wanna buy Core2Duo 3ghz processor, RAM 2 GB and HDD 320 GB. I would suggest u go for Intel DG33 FB motherboard as it will support your processor and it will support your future upgrade need like CPU upgrade – Core 2 Quad support, upto 8 GB RAM support etc.. It will cost you around 5K which I think is cost effective.

I don’t think ASUS P5N MB has NVidia built in card. What it has is the support for two graphics cards on the MB. i:e – you can add upto 2 graphics card on the MB and both will work simultaneously to give you double performance for graphics related softwares. Also I am not sure about the price but maybe higher than DG33FB.

And for a SQL dev what you need is fastest CPU (3.0 Ghz is good choice) and faster and sufficient RAM (2 GB looks good, go for 800 MHz) – your future upgrade may be adding 2 Gb more and a 512 MB graphics card (if U want to convert that into a gaming PC or you install something that slows u r PC).

it’s really confusing when thinking about the dual core and core 2 due processor,
but to ease it , the difference is simple
the core 2 due is more powerful thank the dual core
because it has more processor technologies like 64 bit feature which is not avaliable to all dual core processors and if you really want the best among the two it’s a sure thing that the core 2 duo is the choice, so without any technical details , it’s the core family which is dominating right now>
Have a nice Instruction Execution DAY…..

I am finding it difficult to reply to people’s queries now… I think this thread was started by the author(Choto Cheeta) to educate people about latest Intel Core processors (mainly- Dual Core and Core 2 duo)..but lately people are asking questions not related to this topic (like OS problems, hardware issues, netork issues, etc..)which distract the real users who come here in search of understanding things…

A humble request to everyone.. please keep the posts and queries only specific to the topic name… Avoid this blog getting turned into a cluttered place where you find hard to dig in the actual info… I can already see the bad results… people are asking the same questions again… please go through the already posted comments first before posting new questions….

I just bought a Sony Vaio SR290 Series laptop.
I ordered for a Core2duo processor T3200
The one that came with the laptop is Pentium Dual COre T3200.
Are both the same?
Some of Sony’s agents say it is the same, I am not convinced.

Choto Cheeta  on December 7th, 2008

Hello Ranjan,

The question you have asked is very subjective.. See what you need in depends on your requirements…

G45 and GM965 are 2 different chipset… G45 coming with GMA x4500 is definatelly stronger than GM965 coming with GMA x3100 (GMA => Graphics Media Accelerator) but if you plan just office job with OS like Vista, or even bit of HD movies, then GM965 is more than enough for you.

But having said that, x4500 would have advantage in gaming compare to x3100.

http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/chipsets/g45/g45-overview.htm

http://www.intel.com/products/notebook/chipsets/GM965/GM965-overview.htm

So what is your need ??

And why Dell only ? There are some good products are in market from Lenovo / HP as well which can give your G45 with Core 2 Duo montinova platform at lower rates !!!

Thanks.

Saroj K Panda  on January 8th, 2009

I found some content on the net, just want to make sure the contect is correct. It says

Intel manufactures dual core processors under a number of different architectures.
From the most to least expensive/powerful:

Core 2 Duo
Core Duo
Pentium Dual Core
Celeron Dual Core
The Celeron Dual Core is limited to 512KB of L2 Cache and has lower Front Side Bus (FSB) and clock speeds than chips higher up on the list. However, it is a very low priced CPU and apparently a good overclocker. The only Celeron Dual Core currently available is the E1200 (January 2008). It has 512 KB of L2 Cache, a clock speed of 1.60 GHz and an 800 MHz FSB.

The Pentium Dual Core is the next step up. With 1 MB of L2 Cache, these chips are still targeted at the cost-conscious. Slightly more expensive and slightly better performing than the Celeron Dual Core. The Pentium Dual Core models are: E2200, E21xx, T23xx, and T20xx. All have 1 MB of L2 Cache, either a 533 MHz or 800 MHz FSB and clock speeds ranging from 1.46 GHz to 2.20 GHz.

The Core Duo chips are dual core cpu’s that have 2 MB of L2 Cache. This is also a 32-bit architecture (Celeron and most Pentium Dual Cores are 64-bit). The Core Duo processors: T2700, T2600, T2500, T24xx, T23xx, T22xx, T2050, L2500, L2400, L2300 (L=Low voltage), U2500, U2400 (U=Ultra low voltage). All have 2 MB of L2 Cache. FSB is either 533 MHz or 667 MHz and clock speeds range from 1.06 GHz(for the U2400) to 2.33 GHz.

Core 2 Duo cpu’s are aimed at both desktop and mobile computers in the mid-range of the processor market. This line of cpu’s have L2 caches ranging from 2MB to 6MB and clock speeds from 1.06 GHz (again, for the Ultra low voltage U7500) to 3.16 GHz. The extra cache and higher clock and bus speeds make these generally more expensive and faster than the Core Duo’s. Intel claims a 25% performance increase between two similarly clocked Core Duo and Core 2 Duo cpu’s (but real world benchmarks pegs 5%-15% as a more reasonable claim).

Intel also manufactures the even more expensive and capable Xeon and Itanium dual and quad-core processors for the high-end workstation and server market.

Please confirm.
Thanks

It is completely safe to upgrade your notebook RAM, but certainly the upgrading process is not if its done by some one who is not aware or well trained about the process..

So I would suggest to visit your notebook manufacturers service center outlet to perform the upgrade and do purchased a RAM module which is certified by your notebook vendor.

sir, Iam going to purchase alenovo laptop equiped wiht dual core processor. Is it fruitful for me due to dual processor?

CF  on February 24th, 2009

“Dual Core” is a GENERIC term for processors that have two cores.

Core 2 Duo is a SPECIFIC implementation of a “Dual Core” processor, in this case by Intel. AMD’s version of a dual core processor is the X2. This is NOT a Core 2 Duo, since it is a different product made by AMD rather than Intel.

The term “car” applies to many vehicles, but “Ford Focus” and “VW Golf” are specific products made by rival companies.

Hope this helps.

What is the difernce between HDD & SDD

kanniga,TN  on February 25th, 2009

Can we able to use the widgets in Windows Vista Platform?

CF  on February 25th, 2009

HDD: Standard hard drive with moving platters et al. Is cheap and has large capacity, but also has moving parts, so is more husceptible to damage from movement.

SDD: Solid state drive (SSD) is a hard drive made from flash chips. This means that since there are no moving parts, the laptop tends to be more ‘shock proof’ – though not by too much. They also tend to have faster read/write times. The downside is that they are more expensive, gigabyte for gigabyte, and so for laptops in the same price range the SSD tends to have lower capacity.

naaa, pentium and celeron dual core both have two physical core, just like the core 2 duo, the thing your thinking of is called hyperthreading technolgy, which they have two, but the last solo core procecer that acted as two core, with 1 physical was penyium 4 i think.

Iain  on June 13th, 2009

@naresh singh thakur
the difference is very mild. The basic dual cores ( pentium or celeron dual cores ) have only a 1 mb cache, and have an FSB of 667MHz. the high end versions of them have a 2MB cache and have an 800MHz FSB, and have a higher cock rating ( 2.5GHz for example ) the low end Core 2 duos have 800MHz FSB and a 2MB cache. the mid range have FSB 1066MHz and a 2MB cache, and the high ends have 3MB cache and 1333MHz FSB. all have virtualization tech, and have a better clock and run cooler, making them much better overclockers. basic dual core might get and extra 500MHz to 1GHz faster, but overclocking a core2 duo, u can get up to 2GHz faster on air cooling (with a decend Motherboard)

RafayZ  on June 17th, 2009

@aejr120
it is two processors running at 2.0 each…giving you a total of 4.0ghz….and mine, which is an i7 920 with 2.66ghz has 8 cores running at 2.66ghz each which gives a total processor of 2.66ghz*8=.28ghz! def worth the $300, also the reason the make it into separate cores is because it is more efficient at runs cooler…because the speeds get so high that it nearly surpasses the speed of light making it SUPPER HOT, so they split the power into multiple cores to keep it from over heating…cool no?

ppee  on June 17th, 2009

I think the thing that got us confused the most is the naming and how people call it. I don’t see the name “Intel Dual Core” in any of the processor family. It’s named “Intel Pentium Dual Core”. People who is in d midst of getting a new lappy is mostly comparing on whether to get a PENTIUM Dual Core or CORE 2 Duo ( which actually come from a different family but uses the same technology). Just sharing wt I know. Do correct me if i got it wrong. Sharing is caring!:)

Sorry to say that much of this is incorrect. First of all Rafayz is totally wrong about his core i7. Like all dual or quad cpu, you cant add up the clock speeds in the way he says. Core i7 dont run at 28ghz Rafayz. The man in the shop lied to you to get a sale. Lets say for example you buy a core2 duo 2ghz, they dont run at 4ghz, its 3.6 or less.
The loss is much higher the more cores. The core i7 goes less than 20. 18 would be a fair estimate…

the pentium dual core e5200 is the same as a core2duo with less cache and no hyperthreading which does not make one bit of difference when you overclock this cpu i am running mine mine at 3.2ghz and heat is about 40c under load all you need to do is put up the fsb and away you go being a 800mhz fsb cpu gives you potential for massive overclocking i have heard this cpu can reach 4ghz with a bit more voltage to the cpu and memory also make sure you are using ddr2 800mhz memory in dual channel mode

I tried figuring this out reading all these comments, but there are so many and my eyes are getting blurry. Can someone help me with this? If I need a 2.8GHz processor, will a Core2 Duo 2.1 GHz work? I thought these double with the dual, but from what I understand from these comments, they don’t quite double, but you can expect an increase by having the dual instead of the single? So, rephrasing, if the requirements I need say 2.8GHz, will anything less than 2.8 work? Like a 2.1GHz Core2 Duo.

Design, architecture, features, supported techs, also performance (but not too much). Things will be different, since the OS under which your new chip will be operated, will be somewhat different. in short, IMO: it is a better graphics chip than your old one. about the CPU’s: click here [...]

Difference Between Intel core 2 duo vs Intel dual core

Difference between Intel Core 2 Duo and Dual Core is this:

1. Dual Core processors. They have 2 core in one package, but they are using 1 cache memory for the 2 cores.

2. Core 2 Duo. They have 2 core in one package, but each core have 1 cache memory. And it’s more faster…

never buy dual-core Processors cuz intel try 2 trick u in thinking it has a double CPU inside for example if u hav a 1.73 GHz processor a consumer will think the overall CPU will be 1.73 x2 cuz it say’s dual-core but this is wrong dual-core just a brand name. however, on the other hand core 2 duo has two CPU’s build in side by side so if it is 1.73 GHz you hav to times 1.73 by two so it will become 3.46 GHz overall and that is fast and a gud CPU. therefore, don’t be tricked in buying dual-core cuz u think it has a double CPU in it which it has NOT instead buy core 2 duo cuz that has a double CPU inside.

tutul  on November 25th, 2009

dual core has got one processor…. i,e one execution but two buses which are connected to execution point….1+exe and 1+exe i,e y it is called dual core…
core 2 duo physically has two processors….

Supreeth  on November 28th, 2009

Hello guys…….
I think you people are pretty confused about the difference between Intel Core2Duo and Intel Pentium Dual-core . I will try to clear this –
Both are built on the same CORE microarchitecture . Pentium Dual-core is nothing but a mainstream version of Core2Duo .
Lets compare 2 processors side by side . Consider Pentium Dual-core E5XXX and Core2Duo E7XXX . Both are 45nm processors but the difference is in the clock speed and FSB .
You’ll get a 1066MHZ FSB in C2D but an 800MHZ PDC and 3MB L2 cache in C2D whereas a 2MB L2 cache in PDC .
Both are easily overclockable and runs super cool even while OCed….. If you are looking to buy a decent processor for light gaming I’d prefer you to buy PDC E5200 and spend the saved money on a better graphics card .

Razee  on November 29th, 2009

Baal…….

emochrizzo  on November 30th, 2009

@ satdabest…. u are absolutely wrong.

even u have core 2 duo, let say 3.0ghz. you said that it will double the speed to 6.0ghz? wtf!!!! absolutely not, this is very simple logic. one core speed is 3,0ghz and the other one is 3.0ghz. these frequency will not be doubled as just what you said, instead, they will work as a different core on a specific task. like multitasking. they work different task so that the processing task will be half the time.

and take note pentium dual core and core 2 duo’s are both dual core proc. core2 duo only takes advantage because it has more cache than a pentium dual core thats it. there is no conspiracy involved here.

mythreal_bhabe  on December 2nd, 2009

..is there anyone alive who can give an ACCURATE explanation as to how they differ???

And could those who don’t know just pls keep their speculations to themselves? – We don’t need your “SPECULATIONS”.

We want real answers from people who are
%100 sure they are right….

Dont even bother explaining if you’re just %99.9 sure coz that just ain’t good enough.

~ I hope to find out what the real difference is…coz I can’t seem to find a site that can.

satdabest: are u sure??

manoj  on December 7th, 2009

intel is the best processor in the holl world

akhil sharma  on December 8th, 2009

satbest is wrong there……in fact there is nothing like having two processors of speed 1.73ghz will get doubled and will get to nearly 3.46ghz. this is trully wrong….as consider that if one processor have speed 3ghz then it doesnt mean tht speed will be 6ghz. haha its like there is processor of speed more than wht is manufactured.

rather dual core and core2 duo has different effficiency not depending upon clocks per cycle…
core 2 duo is intel brand…where as dual core is AMD or intel..

moreover if there is multitasking and multithreading then only u can see that core2duo will do more work in same amount of time as for dual core…bt for the single threaded system both will do the same work in same amount of time..
more likely there cant be com[parison between different cpu’s as the total efficiency depends upon individuAL modules performance..as if one cpu has faster rate of I/o..where as other one has greater file handling..
CORE2 DUO also has LARGER CACHE MEMORY than DUAL CORE..which in turn enhances the speed..

akhil sharma  on December 8th, 2009

core2 duo has two cpu’s where as dual core has two cores and single cpu..the two cores can be on single chip die or can be on different die within single chip package….
the two processor can share buses..topologies…
caches..etc
the two processor in core2 duo is like if one processor is executing memory or code then other can simultaneously use the bus or cache in extracting the data..

jijo joseph  on December 14th, 2009

I think the difference is in the cache memory.
both have two cores. Core 2 duo has more cache memory than dual Core.
Core 2 duo is better than dual core.
A dual-core processor contains two cores, and a quad-core processor contains four cores. A multi-core processor implements multiprocessing in a single physical package. Cores in a multi-core device may be coupled together tightly or loosely. For example, cores may or may not share caches, and they may implement message passing or shared memory inter-core communication methods. Common network topologies to interconnect cores include: bus, ring, 2-dimensional mesh, and crossbar. All cores are identical in homogeneous multi-core systems and they are not identical in heterogeneous multi-core systems. Just as with single-processor systems, cores in multi-core systems may implement architectures such as superscalar, VLIW, vector processing, SIMD, or multithreading.

it’ll giving you a great and stable performance when it in a low temperature..
OR you can OVERCLOCKING your cpu by reaching TRIPLE performance!

Jay  on December 22nd, 2009

Don’t forget that to double the speed of your current system you should have a motherboard that can house two CPU’s at the same time (i.e. when inserted on motherboard system speed will be doubled). There are motherboards available with double sockets (one for each CPU) so you can imagine a speed increase of a core 2 duo running at a dobled speed of 4 Ghz instead of 2 Ghz. You can only get a single speed setting with only one CPU but if the correct mothrboard is used you can effectively double it’s speed and you will notice the difference. It’s even possible to increase the speed of a 3.0Ghz computer to 6.0Ghz using the correct dual socket motherboard.

WTF guys…
Seriously WTF…

I have Celeron 3.20 GHz,but everybody told me to buy new processor. Now I wana buy but I need to now which is better or faster….Meybe I have one Core 2 Duo 2.80 GHz 2MB and one Dual Core 2.80 GHz 2MB….which of thi two is better???And sorry if my english is bad…:\\

jerry Thompson  on September 9th, 2010

you should explain futher in more technical terms the difference between the two. that is core2 duo dual core. and its advantagies over the other one.

trooper 2410  on September 29th, 2010

Difference between Dual Core and Core 2 duo is that Dual Core have 2 cores Core 2 Duo have 4 cores. That means Core 2 Duo is better becouse it have 4 cores and all process are divided into the 4 cores so that the processor is burdened and it work faster. If you have Dual Core your copmuter will be 2 times faster if you change it with Core 2 Duo.Intel 2 Duo means Intel Quad Duo,I am not good at it but I think that’s spanish word.If you need good motherboard then bay this one MSI X58A-GD65

I THINK CORE 2 DUO E7500 WITH A SPEED OF 2.93GHZ SPEED AND 3 MB L2 CACHE MEMORY IS A VERY GOOD CHOICE.

sumit  on October 27th, 2010

duel core works in series manner, means when one processor is busy the other one will be in rest state.
and in the case of core 2 dual it works in the manner of parallel, means both proceesor can work together.

Ahmed  on November 3rd, 2010

helllo every one :

will suggest me which board is comaptible than GX620 and core 2 duo ! i wana purschased this but so coonfused !

trooper2410  on November 6th, 2010

Core2Duo have 4 cores,Dual Core have 2 cores. That means Core 2 Duo is 2 times better than Dual Core

trooper2410  on November 6th, 2010

Core2Duo have 4 cores,Dual Core have 2 cores. That means Core 2 Duo is 2 times better than Dual Core…Core 2 Duo have 4 cores and the work is divided between them, so your computer will work faster

hassan  on December 9th, 2010

can i believe on all. ha ha ha

core 2 Duo s better……..

faizan  on January 6th, 2011

core 2 duo has 4 cores while dual core has 2 core so core 2 duo is faster than dual core as all processes divided into 4 cores to work faster.

Jonny  on January 15th, 2011

Stop saying that! Intel core 2 duo only has 2 cores!!!! Its the Intel core 2 Quad that has 4 cores!!!!

still do not know what is a “core” ? ? ? :(

Awais  on January 22nd, 2011

Core 2 Duo!duo means 2 so core 2 duo is same to pentium dual core.if looking for gaming dual core is best option according to price/performance/overclocking ratio.

snatur  on January 25th, 2011

I like quad core . core 2 is running too slow than quad core .

parthasarathi  on January 28th, 2011

Core is nothing but the entire stuff…In human being your brain is called as core….similarly in computer technology core refers a single processor..dual core refers 2 processors…

trooper2410  on February 2nd, 2011

Core 2 Duo – 4 Cores
Dual Core – 2 Cores
What’s the problem?

trooper2410  on February 2nd, 2011

I am bad at English and I have 15 years, but I work with computers 8 years. What’s the fuck up….Dual Core have 2 cores,Core 2 Duo have 4 cores.Like Awais said Duo means 2 so Core 2 Duo is 2 Core x 2 times = 4 Cores…If you can lift weights with 2 hands it will be easier if you lift weights with 4 hands…It will be easier and it will go faster. It;s same like processors…If 2 Cores are overloaded, work will be devided into 4 Cores,so processor will be work faster and your computer will work faster…:@@@
Example:
Intel Pentium D 3.4 GHz – It’s one core,so it’s 3.4 GHz
Intel Dual Core 3.4 GHz – It’s two cores,so it’s 3.4 GHz x 2 = 6.8 GHz
Intel Core 2 Duo 3.4 GHz – It’s four cores,so it’s 3.4 GHz x 4 = 13.6 GHz ……….THIS IS JUST EXAMPLE

I THINK YOU GET IT NOW…p.s. sorry for my bad english

Awais  on February 2nd, 2011

oh common core 2 duo has 2 cores, core 2 quad has 4 cores, pentium d is old but contains 2 pentium 4 cores thats why its meant to be dual cpu.core 2 duo and pentium dual cores are same just a little difference.check everything here:

core 2 duo is beta than the pentium dualcores becoz its available in high FSB speeds L3 cache and the grea hyper threading techo

what is CORE? how it is different from others?

desire bazaanah  on February 18th, 2011

is core 2 duo 1.8GHZ faster than a dual core of 2.2GHZ and why?

also my laptop has the following specs
intelcore2 dou 1.8 GHZ
888mb graphics
128mb dedicated for gaming
2GB memory
but still cant play most games

please how do i upgrade my graphics memory for games sake?

desire bazaanah  on February 18th, 2011

i use toshiba laptop satellite L305 and cant install windows xp ive tried all i can but all yielded negative results
what do i do?

Awais  on February 19th, 2011

well no problem whatsover,Intel Core 2 Duo has 2 cores,so does dual core also has 2 cores.just a small difference of cache and bus speed.not any thing more.you get a brand name.Core is nothing but the entire stuff…In human being your brain is called as core….similarly in computer technology core refers a single processor..dual core refers 2 processors…

so there is no big difference between core 2 duo or dual core.both have 2 cores, both are good at overclocking.Intel has stopped making core 2 duo new models, however pentium dual cores are now being made by them in lga 1156.

trooper2410  on February 21st, 2011

Dual Core vs Core 2 Duo
Dual core processors are those that contain 2 cores in a single silicon chip while Core 2 Duo is the name given by Intel to its second batch of dual core processors.

The processor wars have hit a major speed bump as clock speeds become harder and harder to push upwards. Because the number of transistors in a single chip continues to follow its upward trend, processor manufacturers like Intel and AMD have decided to go a different route in increasing the performance of their products, adding more cores into a single chip that leads to a performance boost if the OS supports it. Two or more cores can greatly aid in multi-tasking where each core can work independently of each other. All processors that have 2 cores in them are collectively called as dual core processors regardless of which manufacturer it came from, while those that have 4 processors in a single chip are called quad core.

Initially, Intel called their dual core processors as Core Duo, a very obvious reference to two cores, while AMD called theirs the X2. Intel’s dual core processors were simply 2 Pentium 3 processors that were fabricated in a single chip. As they refined their product more, they decided to differentiate their second set of processors from the Core Duo and decided to call it Core 2 Duo.

Basically, the difference between dual core processors and the Core 2 Duo processors is just in the semantics as Core 2 Duo is simply a name given to a more recent family of dual core processors. If we translate this to the single core processors, we can say that Core Duo is Pentium 1 while Core 2 Duo is Pentium 2, while AMD has their own processors with different names; but all these are still single core processors. We can therefore say that Core 2 Duo is simply a subset of all the dual core processors that are out in the market today.

Summary:
1. Dual core is the generic name given to processors that have 2 cores on the same chip
2. Core 2 Duo is the second line of dual core processors from Intel
3. Other dual core processors aside from Core 2 Duo are the Core Duo from Intel and the X2 series from AMD
4. All Core 2 Duo processors are dual core but not all dual core processors are Core 2 Duo

And you must know that lap-tops aren’t best for gaming..:\
I suggest you to buy:”Graphic Card 80-90$,Motherboard 80-90$,(if you want)Hard Drive 1000 GB 100-120$,RAM Memory Kingston 2-3 GB 30-40$,Processor Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition 90-110$”,and create your own PERFECT PC…As I know this is great configuraton, but you don’thave to buy that Hard Drive. You Can buy samo of 500 GB,i suggest it becouse you want good gaming PC

which is more better pentium 4 3.6ghz or intel dual core3.0ghz ? please tell me i am really confused.!!!

Awais  on March 13th, 2011

IF the Dual core is Intel Pentium Dual Core then its twice much more better than pentium 4,even a 1.8ghz dual core kills pentium 4 3.8ghz.

Lebron James  on March 29th, 2011

narendhar:

what is CORE? how it is different from others?

The core is the center of the Earth or a planet. It is believed to consist of an iron-nickel alloy, and may have a temperature of 5505 °C.

If it’s a Core 2 Duo then the planet has 2 cores and that means it will have twice gravity and more active volcanoes on the surface.
